Holly’s Challenge: Allergies and Sensitivities to Scents and Fragrances

Home spa day.Holly liked the idea of going to the spa a few times a year, but she found that her allergies and sensitivities to fragrances acted up whenever she spent time in a spa environment. Maybe it was the nail polish remover that was wafting over from the treatment room next door that bothered her or maybe one of the staff members was wearing perfume.

It’s hard to know sometimes what may trigger sensitive skin to react. We’re constantly bombarded by all kinds of junk in our environment and while our immune systems do their best to keep possible threats at bay, we still might have skin issues and conditions.

Sensitive skin is both a genetic skin type and a skin condition and is characterized by fragile, thin skin and redness. When aggravated, sensitive skin might also show up as inflammation, rashes, spots, bumps, acne breakouts, or a burning or itching sensation.

Sensitive skin sunburns easily and has a tendency for sun damage, hyperpigmentation (spots and uneven skin tone), and is prone to Rosacea. Sensitive skin needs to be treated with gentle care.

Sensitive skin can be easily irritated by:

  • Exposure to heat, sun, or smog,
  • Skin care products,
  • Synthetic fragrances (like from laundry soap),
  • Spicy foods,
  • Preservatives,
  • Stress,
  • Age, and
  • Medications.

To care for your Sensitive Skin (including Rosacea)

  • Focus on calming and cooling the skin.
  • Use skin care products that have calming and cooling ingredients like aloe vera, chamomile, and liquorice extracts.
  • Stay hydrated and drink lots of cucumber water, coconut water, and peppermint tea.
  • Avoid irritating products in general (whether you’re applying them on your skin or using other household products).
  • Resist the temptation to touch your face.
  • Wear daily moisturizer with SPF 15 or higher for Sensitive Skin.
  • Make sure you gently wash your face before bed and apply an unscented moisturizer. In other words, don’t sleep with make-up on!
  • Keep your make-up brushes clean and discard expired cosmetics.
  • Avoid aggressive spa treatments and procedures, like excessive rubbing, applying heat, or using abrasive or granular exfoliants.
