The holidays are just around the corner and for many of us, the winter season means extra food and drinks and finding the time for decorating, shopping, gift wrapping, office parties, travelling, and getting together with friends and family.

Although the song says, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year,” getting caught up in the spirit of the holiday season can also be very stressful, especially if you add snow storms and winter driving to the list.

Many of my clients ask me, ‘is there a way to enjoy the holiday season without feeling stressed, tired, and overwhelmed?’

The answer is ‘yes.’ Yes, it is possible to maintain your health and well-being and not get stressed out during the festive holiday season.

So, if you have concerns like:

• How can I better manage my stress during this busy time of year?

• How can I stick to my eating plan when everywhere I look, I see cookies and chocolates and all kinds of delicious treats? and

• How do I get along better with my extended family and enjoy our visits?…

Read on.

Here are 9 Ways to Manage Stress During the Holidays

1. Get some wellness coaching

With a few sessions with a wellness coach, you will reduce stress, stay on top of your to-do list, make a plan to eat well, and have better relationships with your friends, co-workers, and family members. It’s about navigating the waters rather than getting caught up in the current. Working with a wellness coach will help you glide through the holidays with finesse and start the new year off on the right foot.

2. Drink lots of water, hot lemon water, coconut water, and clear herbal tea

Staying hydrated will help you:

  • maintain your energy and not become fatigued,
  • stay warmer on those chilly days,
  • boost your immune system and reduce the chance of catching a cold or flu,
  • control your appetite,
  • avoid gaining some extra pounds,
  • and better digest those rich foods you’ll find at holiday parties.

So, instead of drinking too much caffeine or alcohol during this festive season, drink a glass of coconut water or a mug of hot lemon water or herbal tea, whenever you can.

3. Sniff away your stress with aromatherapy

My favourite scent during this time of year is Cinnamon & Clove essential oil. It’s like holiday baking without the calories and lends a homey, comforting, and warming note to any room.

4. Give yourself a Reflexology foot massage

Often, stress shows up in our neck and shoulders. One day, I realized that the words “should” and “shoulders” are related and many of us carry our shoulds on our shoulders, like painful burdens. With Reflexology, you can work your own shoulders by massaging the acupressure points on the area just under the baby toes on the soles of your feet.

5. Wear gemstone jewellery

December is a great time of year to wear your best gemstone jewellery! I love gemstones because they’re so pretty! I love having them in my energy field and for the festive season, I recommend silvery-black hematite for stress and dark red garnet for love and joy.

6. Take a moment to breathe and be grateful

Whenever you’re feeling overwhelmed or just need a little break from the hustle and bustle of your day, take a few deep breaths through your nose and out through your mouth to ground yourself. As you’re breathing slowly, think of things you’re grateful for. This will help you switch your focus to more positive thoughts.

7. Spend some time outside

Go outside and get some fresh air. It’s invigorating and will help clear your mind.

8. Lend a helping hand

Earlier this morning, I shoveled my driveway after a big snowfall (see #7) and after I was finished, I helped my next door neighbours with theirs. It felt really good to pitch in and help someone out.

9. Call Homespunspa Mobile Spa

I know it seems counter-intuitive to book yet another appointment during this busy time of year, especially for something like a massage where you can’t multi-task. However, it’s important to continue practicing your self-care and take the time to top up your own tank so that you can keep up with the demands on your time and energy. There’s also nothing more healing than therapeutic touch. Luckily, as a mobile spa, we come to you and will give you relaxing spa services in your very own home. We offer massages, manicures, pedicures, and facials to help people relax, look better, and feel better.

To schedule an appointment for mobile spa services and wellness coaching, please call Maria @ 250-812-3487 or email: homespunspa@shaw.ca.

I hope these 9 tips will help you reduce and even avoid stress over the holidays. If you have any tips to share, feel free to add your comments about minimizing stress below. Thanks!

Happy holidays!

My Interview with Spray Tan Artist, Anna

We have a new member on our team at Homespunspa Mobile Spa! Let me introduce you to Anna Pretto, a professional Airbrush Spray Tan Artist who is certified in Spray Tanning, Lash Extensions, and Hair Threading.

Anna will be offering spray tanning as part of our new Saturna Island Spa Party Package. Because you may have some questions about spray tanning, I thought it would be a nice idea to interview Anna to find out more about this fun spa service.

Hi Anna, I’m so excited that you have joined the Homespunspa Mobile Spa team and you will be giving spray tans as part of our new Saturna Island spa party package. Welcome!

I’d like to ask you some questions on behalf of our customers to introduce you to everyone and to show how spray tanning works.

1. What’s your favourite part of being a airbrush spray tan artist?

Seeing the immediate, great results that clients receive from a spray tan.

Spray Tan Artist, Anna

2. What lead you to become a professional airbrush spray tan artist?

Because of my love of all things esthetics, I wanted to add another service to my menu. I chose spray tanning because it is a healthy and safe alternative to traditional tanning methods and I feel proud that I can offer that to my clients.

3. Do you have any memories of tanning when you were growing up?

Yes! Being of Greek descent, every year that summer would come around I remember from even when I was a child that my olive skin would radiate when I started to tan.

4. What is a spray tan?

Sunless spray tanning is the spray/mist application of sunless tanning solution to desired areas of your body. When applied, DHA (the active ingredient in sunless tanning solution) reacts with the proteins in the skin’s superficial layer to form a golden brown colour. Your skin begins to darken 2 to 3 hours after application and reaches its peak colour within 24 hours. The colour will gradually fade through natural exfoliation, just like a tan from the sun.

5. What are the benefits of getting a spray tan?

There are lots of benefits with getting a spray tan:
An even, streak-free tan — the fine mist allows an even application all over, with no patchiness, and without going orange;
• Improved appearance — a spray tan helps you to look good year round, look thinner and healthier instantly, and it boosts self confidence;
• Even skin tone — A spray tan evens out skin tone and hides blemishes and imperfections, including stretch marks and varicose veins;
• Fast application — It’s fast: in just 15 minutes you can go from being pale and white to having a deep bronzed tan.

6. Is spray tanning safe?

Yes! DHA is non-toxic and non-carcinogenic. It’s made from sugar and is also used in the food industry. Spray tanning with DHA as the active tanning agent is approved and recommended by all the major medical associations and skin cancer associations around the world.

7. What spray tan product do you use and why did you choose this brand?

I use Aviva Natural Spray Tanning Solutions which is organic and is even used by celebrities. Here are the following reasons why we use only the safest of solutions:
1. Doctor formulated.
2. Natural-looking and long lasting.
3. Even-fading.
4. Oil-free.
5. Fragrance-free.
6. Alcohol-free.
7. Erythrulose-free.
8. Only made with FDA approved Ingredients.
9. All natural.
10. Composed of the highest quality, premium grade DHA.
11. Water-based.
12. Fast-drying.
13. Vegan.
14. Not tested on Animals.
15. Free of harsh dyes and chemicals.
16. Nut-free and allergen-free.
17. Non-comedogenic
18. Hypoallergenic.

8. That’s quite a list! Does the spray tanning solution give off an odour?

Aviva spray tan solution doesn’t give off any odour at all.

9. Can you customize the tints? Can I (the guest) choose how tanned I want to be?

Yes, I’ll evaluate your skin type to help you achieve your best sunless colour possible and I’ll consult with you to find what kind of colour you are looking to achieve.

10. Do the spa party guests have to remove all of their clothes to get their spray tan and how do you maintain privacy?

You can wear a swimsuit, undergarments or no clothes at all, whatever you’re comfortable with!

Also, here’s a photo of the spray tent –>. To maintain privacy and for those guests who are feeling modest, the tent can be placed in a more private area of the spa party venue.

11. Can the spray tan stain furniture and if so, is there anything you do to prevent that?

The spray tent keeps the spray inside the tent. For whatever reason, should there be any overspray on furniture, for example, it’s easily washed off with a wet cloth as it’s all organic. For the spa parties, we have some cloths on hand and would just clean things up right away.

12. How much space is required for you to set up your spray tanning tent?

Luckily, spray tanning doesn’t require much space at all! My mobile spray tanning tent can be set up virtually anywhere while protecting anything outside of it from spray.

13. What’s the difference between Air Brush Tanning and Spray Booths?

Booth – whatever your body size or height, a spray booth will spray you with the exact same motion and amount of spray.

Airbrush – The amount of spray can be adjusted and tailored to your body type and for your needs.
• Airbrush tanning is much more accurate than booth sprays;
• Airbrushing can be done in the comfort of your home;
• What a booth does in 30-60 seconds, airbrushing takes between 10-15 minutes;
• Airbrush tanning allows for a precise application of the solution evenly across your body, ensuring the best results;
• Airbrush tanning is also cleaner than booth sprays;
• Airbrushing tends to last longer;
• Barrier creams are not necessary;
• No head caps or booties are needed.

14. Is there anything the spa party guests have to do before getting their spray tan?

• Wax or shave 24 hours before your spray tan as this will allow the pores to close before your tan;
• Do not apply deodorants, moisturizers or perfumes the day of your appointment or spa party as these can prevent proper absorption of the tanning solution.
• Exfoliate 24 hours before to remove any dead skin cells.

15. What if the spa party guests don’t have a chance to exfoliate their skin before the spa party?

If by chance the skin hasn’t been exfoliated 24 hours prior to the tan, we have the option to exfoliate at the time of the tan at the spa party; however, I cannot guarantee that the results would be as good, as the skin hasn’t had a chance to recover.

Yes, we have an exfoliation treatment option and make-up removal option built into the spa party theme (instead of getting the chair massage) in case someone needs to take those steps before getting their spray tan at the spa party.

16. Are there any contraindications (like eczema or some sort of skin rash, burn, scar or health condition) that will prevent you from applying the spray tan to someone?

No. In an organic spray tan such as this one, wrinkles, dry skin, irritation, rashes and other skin problems are diminished. The spray binds the moisture in the skin and repairs skin cells that have been damaged by harsh sun rays. It eliminates the formation of dried-out skin which normally occurs after traditional spray tanning.

17. How long will the spray tan last?

Your body is always shedding dead skin cells. This is why even a natural sun tans fade over a few days. Spray tanning affects only the outer skin layer, so just like a natural sun tan the spray tan fades as your skin cells are shed. Your spray tan will usually last between 5 to 10 days.

18. Do you have any tips on making the spray tan last longer?

1. Bring loose, baggy clothing to wear after your appointment. Tight clothing will rub against your skin and may cause patches.
2. To avoid strap marks, I recommend you do not wear your bra after you appointment, until your tan has fully developed and you have washed it off.
3. Bring flip-flops to wear after your appointment, as shoes/socks will cause the tan to rub off/leave patches.
4. Wait at least 8 hours before showering after your spray tan.
5. Moisturize with an oil free moisturizer.

19. Wow! We’ve covered a lot of territory in this interview, Anna. Of course, people may still have more questions and if so, how can they reach you?

For more information about Anna and spray tans, please visit Lash and Glow or call 250-857-7837 and be sure to say, “I’m looking forward to hosting a Saturna Island spa party!”

And if you’re ready to book your Saturna Island Spa Party theme package right away, please call Maria at Homespunspa Mobile Spa at 250-812-3487 or email at homespunspa@shaw.ca.

Thank you, Anna, I’m sure spa lovers from Sooke to Sidney will enjoy our Saturna Island Spa Party Theme Package. I think adding spray tanning to the Homespunspa mobile spa menu is a great idea and the spa parties are going to be a blast!

Splash Some Spa Time into Your Staycation this Summer

Now that summer is officially in full swing — yay! — you might be looking for fun things to do. Have you considered planning a staycation?

Victoria, British Columbia is one of the most beautiful and relaxing places on earth and as locals, we should enjoy and appreciate our city more. We live on an island in the Pacific Ocean for goodness’ sakes! Our city has so much to offer and sometimes it can be fun to stay home and explore the local scene with the fresh eyes of a tourist.

Staycation

Sprinkler in Beacon Hill Park.

Sprinkler in Beacon Hill Park.

“Staycation” is a newly-coined term (as of 2005) by Canadian comedian, Brent Butt, from the tv show “Corner Gas.” The term refers to taking time off from work by choosing to stay home rather than going away, somewhere else, on vacation. Common activities of a staycation include pitching a tent and camping outside within a stone’s throw from your backdoor and swimming in the backyard pool.

Tips for a Successful Staycation

1. Make it official: Treat your staycation as a regular vacation. Pick your dates, whether it’s a day, a weekend, a long-weekend, a whole week, or longer :) and stick to them — no excuses — as if you’ve paid your deposit on a hotel room and have already booked your flights. Also, tell your friends so they know what you’re up to.

2. Take care of housekeeping: On the day before your staycation begins, clean your house from top to bottom. Make it as “hotel chic” as you can. As a treat, hire a professional service to do it for you! You might also consider turning off your newspaper subscription and holding your mail to not remind yourself of your regular daily routine. Don’t forget to display mini toiletries in your bathroom!

3. Plan your itinerary: Staycations give people a chance to act like a tourist in their own town and visit local restaurants, parks, beaches, museums, festivals and events. Have an idea of what you’d like to see and do around town ahead of time. If there’s a restaurant you’d like to try, make a reservation. If there’s an outdoor festival in your community, buy your tickets in advance. Or maybe you’d like to go on a winery tour or catch a ferry to a nearby island. Think of all of the things you wish you had time to do but never get around to and then do them!

4. Pack your suitcase: It’s time to get your suitcase out. This may confuse your pets but that’s OK. :) Make sure to pack clothes that you’d wear on your vacation if you were leaving town. Then on your first day of your staycation, grab your suitcase, leave your house, go around the block, and then re-enter your house as if you’re checking into a hotel. If you skip this step, you may be tempted to not go ahead with your staycation plans and on top of that, it really ups the fun quotient.

5. Hire a mobile spa: Splashing some spa time into your staycation will really kick things up a notch. And you don’t have to go out to a chi chi day spa if you don’t want to. You can invite a mobile spa, like Homespunspa, to come to you. All of a sudden, your home will be transformed into a spa resort and you will reap the benefits of the relaxing spa treatments exponentially. There’s no added stress with mobile spa appointments because getting spa services in your home means you don’t have to worry about driving in traffic, finding a parking spot, running into other spa guests, and messing up your nail polish.  Homespunspa Mobile Spa offers a wide range of spa services including massages, manicures, pedicures and facials. If you’d like to make the most of your staycation, we can easily bring the spa to you! Please call or email to make your appointment.

6. Schedule a VIP spa day: VIP spa days take the spa experience to a whole new level because now you’re on a retreat. At Homespunspa, we’ve just introduced a Stress Relief VIP Spa Day to our mobile spa menu and it’s so wonderful and awesome! Our Face-to-Face Stress Relief VIP Spa Day is a full day, intensive, one-to-one spa appointment. I’ll bring the spa experience to you in 5 different sessions over the course of one day. The Face-to-Face Stress Relief VIP Spa Day includes a guided meditation, a 30-minute energy healing massage, a 60-minute skin balancing facial with eye zone treatment, paraffin hand and foot treatments, a hike in a nearby park and a healthy lunch at an upscale restaurant. It’s perfect for a staycation! If you’re interested, please contact me by email or phone.

Staycations are a great idea and you can get really creative with your time off. Staycations do not have the stress associated with travelling, such as making your connecting flights or buying travellor’s cheques from the bank, and are a good way to save money.

If you’d like help planning your staycation this summer, please contact me, Maria. I have tons of ideas and I’d love to hear from you. Cheers to summer!

First of all — Big Announcement! Homespunspa has just launched a sister website to www.homespunspa.com. Introducing www.homespunspa-mobilespa.com. Our new micro website has been especially designed for the corporate market — just in time for the Christmas holiday season — and we’re all set to spruce up holiday parties in living rooms and boardrooms across Victoria, BC.

Cheers to spa parties!

With only 61 days and counting until Christmas, the office holiday party is fast approaching. Mobile spa services add sparkle to any party and are hands down, by far, a more memorable “Season’s Greetings” than chocolates, flowers, or a turkey for the holidays.

Homespunspa Mobile Spa is set to provide mini spa services during office holiday parties in the workplace and corporations can now request Homespunspa Mobile Spa to come to their office so staff can enjoy:

  • chair massages;
  • aromatherapy massages;
  • hand treatments including mini mani’s and hand massages;
  • foot treatments including mini pedi’s and foot massages;
  • and facials.

Party-planning committees can rest easy knowing everyone will be pleased as punch with this year’s spa party theme and to make things even more festive for the holiday staff party, Homespunspa can offer candy-cane-scented foot massages, pumpkin spice foot soaks and seasonal nail polish colours.

Recently, Homespunspa Mobile Spa was invited to give spa services for 20 women at a private birthday party. While the mini facials and mini massages were held in a quieter room, those receiving mini mani’s and mini pedi’s on the covered and heated patio had a lovely view of the ocean. “I just wanted to thank you again for today. You were a pleasure to work with and I’m very happy with how it all turned out,” said Jasmein Sran, spa party guest and organizer.

Also, Homespunspa Mobile Spa was hired to deliver spa services at a conference at a local hotel and gave chair massages as well as mini mani’s and mini pedi’s over the course of two afternoons. “We chose Homespunspa because [they] replied promptly to our call and were able to offer nail services as well as chair massages and that set [them] apart,” said Karen Walter, conference organizer.

Homespunspa Enterprises was established in 2001 and the mobile spa division was added in 2011. Promoting employee relaxation through our corporate mobile spa services, Homespunspa is like a breath of fresh air for your home and office.

If you’d like more information on this topic or to book a spa party, please call 250-812-3487 or email: homespunspa@shaw.ca. Happy holidays!

Does Being Pregnant Make Your Nails Grow Faster?

Yesterday, Homespunspa Mobile Spa was invited to give mini mani’s to new mothers at the MotherFest at Mothering Touch. It was a pre-Mother’s Day mini mani marathon for me and Ranjit and the nail polish was flying!

The most popular colour choice? Good ol’ Lucky Lucky Lavender. See if you can spot the bottle in the photo below.

Homespunspa's collection of nail polish colours.

Homespunspa's collection of nail polish colours.

The new mothers brought their babies to the event and had a choice of treating themselves to all kinds of pampering services from Thai Massage to Belly Painting to a Photoshoot. At one point in the afternoon, there must have been at least 60 babies in the store at once. It was truly an honour and a really joyful experience for me to be so close to so many infants at the same time. One was only three weeks old! So cute!

Anyway, back to the question at hand: Does Being Pregnant Make Your Nails Grow Faster?

As each of the women sat in front of me to get their nails filed and polished, I asked many of them, just out of curiosity, if they’re finding a difference in their nails now that they’re pregnant. The surprising answer was “Yes” and most, if not all of them, had noticed how much stronger their nails were and how much faster they grew while they were pregnant. One woman said, “It must be the prenatal vitamins we’re taking.” :)

Prenatal vitamins are designed to help ensure better health for fetus and mother. These vitamins and supplements contain high concentrations of folic acid, calcium and iron and low amounts of vitamin A. Some brands also include Omega-3’s and DHA.

As it turns outs, it’s not the prenatal vitamins that make the nails grow stronger and faster — it’s the pregnancy hormones that are key. During pregnancy, the woman’s body starts to produce a bigger batch of hormones than usual and these hormones have a number of tasks and responsibilities. For one, they boost circulation and send a constant deluge of vital nutrients to the skin, which in turn makes nails grow faster.

So that answers that.

If you’re a new mom and can’t keep up with trimming your nails during this special time and want a little treat for yourself, please call me, Maria, at Homespunspa. I’d be happy to come to your home and give you your choice of a manicure, pedicure, facial or massage at your convenience. And the beauty of a mobile spa is…you don’t have to worry about getting a babysitter because you’ll be within earshot of your little ones the whole time. And why not invite some friends over and make it a spa party?

Anyway, I’d like to take this moment to wish all of the moms and mother figures out there and especially my own dear mother, a very happy Mother’s Day. Cheers to you!

Dear friends of Homespunspa:

These days I’m busy writing a new business plan for Homespunspa Mobile Spa and I need your help. I’d really appreciate it if you would take a few minutes to fill out this market research survey — it’s only 10 questions — so I can re-design Homespunspa and take it to the next level of success. I want to extend my reach and design a business that better serves my customers and gives people more of what they want and need. Here’s your chance to have an influence on the direction I take with my business.

It’s hard to believe Homespunspa has been online since 2001. This business has come a long way and I can’t wait to see it grow more and more. Helping people relax, manage stress and get a good night’s sleep using the gifts from nature have always been the key elements of Homespunspa and they won’t change. The changes I make will only enhance the services we already provide.

Please take a minute to fill out my survey. Here’s the link: Click here to take survey. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Homespunspa Mobile Spa, we bring the spa home to you.

And thank you to those who have already completed this market research survey. :) I’m truly grateful for your feedback.

All answers are confidential and I have no way of knowing which answers anyone has provided which means you are free to be honest with your responses.

If you think you know someone who would be interested in filling out this survey, by all means, please forward this survey to them. The more people who participate, the better. And it doesn’t matter to me whether you live in Victoria, BC or not. Your input still has value to me.

And let me know by email or with a comment on this blog that you have completed this survey because as an incentive, I’m offering a 10% discount on all spa services (excluding services from the mini spa menu) if you take this survey and make your appointment with Homespunspa Mobile Spa before Thanksgiving Day (Monday, October 8, 2012).

Here’s the link once again: Click here to take survey.

I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Maria

Do you have Insomnia?

Raise your hand if you consistently get 7 hours of uninterrupted sleep a night and wake up feeling refreshed and ready to start the day?

Hello, my name is Maria and I’m an esthetician and the owner of Homespunspa Mobile Spa where we bring the spa experience home to you. We specialize in the art of relaxation and getting a better night’s sleep.

In today’s blog post, I’d like to explore one of my all-time favourite topics, insomnia. The word “insomnia” comes from “Somnus, the Roman god of Sleep” with the prefix “in” added to negate the noun. Insomnia is defined as the “chronic inability to fall asleep or stay asleep without interruptions for an adequate amount of time” and an “insomniac is a person who suffers from insomnia.”

You have some degree of insomnia is you can say yes to either of these questions:

  1. Do you have trouble sleeping?
  2. Do you have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep for several hours?

According to my research:

  • We spend around 1/3 of our lives sleeping or an average of 24 years out of 75! (you’d think we’d be really good at it :) )
  • If you suffer from diabetes, hypertension, depression, or are obese, you may also be experiencing poor quality sleep.
  • 20-40% of all adults suffer from insomnia at some time during the year.

Insomnia is obviously a huge topic and I’m going to explore it as best I can over the next 30 days as part of a series. I’m going to uncover some of the mysteries and myths that surround sleep and offer tips on how to sleep better. And if you have any tips of sleeping that you’d like to share, by all means, leave a comment. I hope you join me on this journey and maybe we will all improve the quality of our sleep soon.

Let your Spa Party Sparkle with Fun Spa Games

Are you planning a spa party? Would you like to add some sparkle to your spa night? Why not add a few spa games to the menu alongside your facials, massages, mani’s and pedi’s?

Homespunspa Mobile Spa is quickly becoming a popular provider of spa services at spa parties all over Victoria, BC and I have lots of ideas on how to make your next spa party extra special and memorable. For more information on our pajama parties, please click here.

Here are some ideas for fun and relaxing spa games to keep your guests entertained and engaged throughout your party.

1) Top of Mind

I found this picture below from my archives. This photo was taken at one of the very first Homespunspa parties many years ago and I can’t for the life of me remember what I had the girls write on their heads. They’re obviously concentrating really hard — maybe they were drawing a map or the house they grew up in or both. The game was designed to help with memory (ironically) and motor skills but all I remember is, they should not have chosen such heavy textbooks to place on their heads.

2) Two Truths and a Lie

Have each guest write 3 facts about themselves on an index card but one of the 3 “facts” will be a lie. Place all of the cards in a basket and as each card is drawn, everybody else has to figure out a) who wrote the card and b) which statement is a lie.

When I first played this game on my second day of esthetics school, I wrote that I lived in Hawaii, I’ve sung live with Michael Buble and am distantly related to Pamela Anderson. Which do you think is false? I fooled most people and it was a great way to get to know my new classmates.

3) What I hate most about housecleaning

Obviously, this game is not appropriate for the tweens and teens, but it’s perfect for a bachelorette party. Have everyone write down their most hated housecleaning chore on an index card and explain the reason why. Everyone should write: “What I hate most about housecleaning is ______________ because _____________________________. Then substitute the question, “What I hate most about sex is…” and then take turns saying your answers out loud.

I played this game at a bridal shower once and my answer was, “cleaning the tub because of all the stretching and reaching.” There were a lot of laughs during that game.

4) Budding Journalist

Choose a bunch of funny photos such as this one below with the 2 cats and then have everyone at the party write witty captions to go along with them.

Write a caption for this goofy pic at your next spa party.

5) The Ha Ha Game

I haven’t played this game since the 80’s at summer camp although I don’t know why because it’s surprisingly ticklish from the inside out. Have all of your guests lie down on the floor. Each person will rest their head on another person’s belly. The first person will say, “Ha.” The second person will say, “Ha, Ha.” The third person will say, “Ha, Ha, Ha” and so on. You won’t get very far down the line because pretty soon everybody will be laughing hysterically for no reason. It’s a gas — laughing gas, that is!

Well, here’s my list of 5 spa party games to get you going. Please write a comment and let me know if you have any other ideas for spa games. I’ll make sure to add them to the list. The possibilities are endless. Cheers, Maria

Wrap your loved ones in bathrobes this year

Growing up in a Ukrainian-speaking household, we used the word “Shlaf-frock” for bathrobe or housecoat. Up until about 5 minutes ago when I used Google Translate, I always thought the Ukrainians borrowed this lovely word from the Germans because I knew “Schlaf” meant “sleep” in German and I believed “frock” meant dress. I thought it was a clever word and I always got a warm and fuzzy feeling every time I said it.

Well, as it turns out, I have been wrong on a few counts all of these years. First, the Ukrainians took the word “szlafrok” from the Polish language and on top of that, Ukrainians in Ukraine (according to my friend) don’t even know that word at all anymore — they use “hhalat,” as do the Russians — and “szla” doesn’t mean sleep in Polish — it means “precious.” Confused yet? I am.

Regardless of my befuddled etymology, I’m still sticking with good old Shlaf-frock because it’s fun to say.

And did you know that putting on a bathrobe is one of the most relaxing things you can do at the end of a long and stressful day? Don’t believe me? I invite you to go and put your bathrobe on right now and see for yourself. Just take it off the hook on your bathroom door, drape it over your shoulders, stick your arms in and tie the belt in a loose bow. Go on. I’ll wait.

Still waiting…

There you are!

Well? How do you feel now? Better? I thought so.

There’s something about a bathrobe that lets your body know that it’s time to relax and unwind and get ready for a good night’s sleep.

It’s no wonder that bathrobes are a big feature in all of the spas. Where else are you encouraged to walk around in your bathrobe and slippers in the middle of the day?

The History of Bathrobes

Funnily enough, bathrobes can be traced all the way back to the togas of ancient Rome. In the days of yore before indoor plumbing caught on, it was customary for people to head to the local bathhouses to get wet and clean. I guess bathing suits hadn’t been invented yet and they needed something that could maintain some semblance of modesty in a public space and be slipped on and off easily at poolside.

Time travel to Asia in the 1800’s and you’ll see a resemblance between the silk kimono and our stylish bathrobes of today.

Bathrobes make excellent gifts any time of year

If you’re looking for gift ideas for friends and family, why not wrap your loved ones in bathrobes this season. Summer or winter, rain or shine, young or old, man or woman — everyone likes a nice bathrobe to wear morning or night.

Bathrobes are unique in the world of fashion because they are equally regal and luxurious on the one hand (maybe that’s why the Polish call them “precious”) and cozy and informal on the other.

When you picture a bathrobe, do you see a white, thick one made of terry cloth or do you remember the loud orange velour one with the busy jungle pattern from your high school days or maybe you had a pink fuzzy one with flower appliqués? I personally have a soft spot for tacky and ugly bathrobes because those bathrobes are the ones that are most loved by the people who wear them.

I had a red, wool plaid one in high school which wasn’t very practical but it looked nice and made me feel like I was living in LL Beanland. I also had a thin peach one that became thinner and thinner every time I washed it. Later, I had a white terry towel one with a pink collar. Now I have a purple polar fleece polyester knit that my mom made for me. Of course I also have a lots of waffle ones for my spa guests to wear during our Homespunspa Mobile Spa appointments.

In any case, regardless of everyone’s tastes and personality, I’m sure there’s a nice bathrobe or shlaf-frock out there for everyone on your list. Just make sure they don’t feel scratchy to the touch and can absorb excess moisture from the skin after a bath, shower or day at the beach. That’s all I ask. Otherwise, go to town.

Oh and please send me pictures of your favourite bathrobes. I would love to add them to this blog post.
