Master Improvisor Tina Fey said, “Say yes and you’ll figure it out afterwards.” Saying “yes” and “yes and” are mighty pillars of improv.

Starting with “yes and” is energizing and empowering. In improv, “yes ands” get you unstuck and move the scenes foward. Suddenly trust and safety show up, giving creativity a chance to blossom, while things like negativity and resistance leave the room. The same philosophy can be applied to real life, too, and a big “yes” can move you forward toward the life of your dreams.

Saying yes is exhiliarating!

Did you know that the word “yes” is the most powerful word in any language? Have you ever thought how people would respond to you if you most often said “yes” rather than the dreary “no”? Have you ever considered what it would be like to say an enthusiastic “yes” to yourself when opportunity comes knocking? Do you remember a moment when you said “yes” and what experiences unfolded from there? What would saying “yes” make available to you?

Saying “yes” can have a huge impact on your life and I’m delighted to announce that I’ve partnered with my friend and mentor, Carol Vickers, leadership coach and faciliator at the Rayner Institute, and we are collaborating to bring an energetic and playful workshop to Victoria called, “Say Yes to Yourself.”

Our “Say YES to Yourself” workshop is on Saturday, April 9, 2016 from 9am to 4pm at Regus Victoria – The Atrium, #300-800 Yates Street @ Blanshard, in Victoria, BC. To register, please click on our Eventbrite page.

The idea for this workshop started from my own “Yes” — although at the time, I had no idea what my original yes would lead to. Funny how life works and I’m thrilled at how things are turning out. If you’re curious to hear the story of how I first met Carol, please read my blog post, “How I found out about the Rayner Institute” but this story picks up from there.

I was humming and hawing for months about whether or not to sign up for coaching training at the Rayner Institute so Carol and I met for coffee at Habit (auspiciously located at the Atrium, the venue of our workshop) to discuss my options and Carol offered a suggestion. She described her relationship with her grandson and she says “yes” to him every chance she gets. She invited me to say “yes” to myself for the rest of the day to see how that feels. It was quite a foreign concept to me at the time but I really appreciated having a little breathing space from the excuses that were holding me back.

Looking back to that conversation with Carol a year ago, I shudder to think where I’d be now if I had said “no” instead. I’m so glad I said “yes” to the coaching training and to co-presenting this workshop with Carol!

In essence, the workshop is about finding your voice and during the day, we will be looking at your future and imagining it from a safe place where you are ready to say “YES” to all of the opportunities and possibilities in front of you.

When you are able to say “yes” from a place of self-acceptance, self-awareness, and knowing that you are enough, you can move mountains!

Henry David Thoreau wrote, “Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them.” Carol and I are inviting you to spend the day with us so you can ultimately have what you need to fully and loudly sing your song.

Because this is a workshop, we have a few hands-on and interactive activities planned for you including learning easy ways to open your Throat Chakra, (the energy center for creativity and self-expression), creating your own vision board (either collaging the old school way or online via Pinterest), sharing stories over a catered, working lunch, and games such as:

The Improv Game of “Yes and…”

The focus of the game is to learn the basics of “Yes and” because “Yes and” is the foundation for all of improvisation.

The rules are really easy. Players stand in a circle. The first player makes a simple statement. The second player then says, “Yes, and…” and adds a detail of sorts to the first statement. The game continues around the circle with each player adding to the story until it reaches a conclusion.

Our Say Yes to Yourself workshop is for anyone who is tired of feeling numb, silent, and lonely, and who has stifled their own voice and has kept quiet to not make any waves, all the while knowing that there’s got to be something more, that they have something more to offer, that they have something important to say. We have the freedom to express oursleves in this country so let’s embrace it. This workshop is a chance for you to awaken your voice, and share yourself, and make a positive difference, and feel more alive!

Our intention is to create a space and a community where participants can find their authentic voice, feel free to be who they are, feel empowered to share their talents, gifts, creativity, and ideas, and express themselves wholeheartedly in this world. We want to remind you that you really do matter and you are enough already. We also want to see big smiles across your faces and see your eyes light up!

We are excited to hold this event in the beautiful Atrium office building located in the heart of Victoria’s central business district.  No need to stop at Timmy’s along the way because we’ve included coffee and refreshments for the breaks as well as a lovely lunch.

I’ve recently returned home from my whirlwind Wellness Tour. I spent three and a half months immersing myself in the field of wellness at Dr. Oksana Sawiak’s Integrative Wellness & Detox Centre in Norval, Ontario, just outside of Toronto, in the middle of a crazy Canadian winter and now am feeling refreshed and rejuvenated and ready to take my Homespunspa Mobile Spa business to the next level of success. Although I often felt like a fish out of water and completely out of my comfort zone, I know deep down in my heart that this whole experience was well worth the time I spent there.

When I left Victoria, I was feeling stuck, frustrated and burned out. I knew I had to do something different from my regular routine if I wanted things to change and improve. I know most people don’t have the luxury of leaving their life for a few months to explore different options and I’m grateful that I was able to take Dr. Oksana up on her invitation.

I started feeling better soon after I arrived in mid-November. I’m passionate about health and wellness and was learning something new every day. Even though I didn’t know what to expect from my internship, I was open to learning whatever I could and when Dr. Oksana suggested I sign up for a Higher Transformational Healing Workshop with Fred Vokey to learn about healing, I was game. Both Dr. Oksana and I participated in the full-day workshop and the experience for me was inspiring, enlightening and profound.

I’m aware that the topic of energy healing may sound a little “out there” or “woo, woo” to some people — that’s up to everyone to decide for themselves. I personally think it’s pretty cool. There’s a long tradition of healing in history across most, if not all religions and cultures and it’s just a matter of remembering, re-learning and re-activitating that wisdom and knowledge in today’s day and age.

I truly believe that the healing I experienced while I was away had a lot to do with the Higher Transformational Healing workshops I attended and now I’m a certified instructor and can teach you how to turbo charge the healing energy around you so you can heal yourself and others.

Add a Home Gym to your Home Spa

Yesterday, while I was in the midst of running on the treadmill (24 minutes non-stop — a new record for me), I was chatting with my personal trainer and she was telling me her plans for re-decorating her studio. I was surprised to hear that she has been planning to install a tv near the treadmill for quite some time.

I suggested now is the perfect time to set up her tv because in the past, I’ve found watching the Olympics while exercising myself to be a lot of fun. It just gives you an extra boost of energy and somehow you end up increasing your speed and your enthusiasm. She agreed wholeheartedly and said “It’s a great motivator” and “thanks for the reminder!”

Home Gym

Here I am after one of my workouts with my trainer.

If you’d like to add a home gym to your home spa, here are my suggestions. Start small and build as you can. And don’t just admire it, use it!

  • Dedicate Space: Where will you workout? Do you have access to a spare room or is your living room multi-purpose like mine is? If you’re going to be setting up shop in your living room (I don’t recommend your bedroom because the equipment and the activity will interfere with your sleeping environment), then you’ll want to choose equipment that you can store and access easily. I have a treadmill that folds and stands upright against a wall and that works for me. I keep it next to the tv so when it’s time for a walk/run, I just move the coffee table and extend the platform and I’m off to the races.
  • Big Equipment: I’ve already mentioned a treadmill because that’s what I use. I highly recommend getting one. They can be quite expensive and keep in mind that the cheaper ones will be noisy (which will annoy the rest of your household) and will not have a lot of extra bells and whistles, like built in heart-rate monitors or a cushy running base, but even a cheap one is good to have. If you prefer some other equipment or have a lot of extra room, you can look into buying an elliptical trainer, a stairmaster, a stationary bike, a rowing machine or a strength-training machine. You might even consider installing a pole which will work your abs like nothing else once you get past the hanging upsidedown part. Your home gym will be really high end if you also have access tennis courts and swimming pools and saunas. I have a friend you had a squash/basketball court in his house which was really cool, I always thought.
  • Handy Equipment: There’s a ton of great equipment that you can use in your home gym. Start with a yoga mat for your stretches. Hand-held weights are useful to have — start with low weights (two each of 1-, 2-, 3- & 5-pounders) and work your way up to 7’s, 8’s, 10’s, 12’s, 15’s, and 20-pluses. There are also adjustable weights you can strap on to your legs. For more resistance, get some tubes or bands that come in green, red, pink and purple depending on their strength. Suzanne Summers’ Thigh Master is still a winner. There are also inflatable pilates balls that are very versatile but only buy the ones that say “anti-burst.” You can also buy a mini trampoline or a low-tech jump rope that will really save space. I also have a plastic step from the 90’s which I’m planning to use again one of these days. Remember to use the built-in stairs in your house, too. My trainer has a Bosu (that half-ball in the picture) and last week on the Biggest Loser, I saw an Olympic athlete balance on one foot while doing the hoola-hoop on one. It looked fun and hard to do at the same time. I wonder if you can buy those speed skating gliding strips that they also used on the Biggest Loser for home use? My trainer told me that those are way harder than they look and are great for building endurance.
  • Extra Features: To make your home gym more enjoyable, design it with care. If it’s a dark and dingy room in your basement, you won’t use it. To brighten things up, install a large, full-length mirror so you can see your form while you’re working out. Also, having a tv within sight that plays your favourite workout videos will add variety to your exercise routine. A stereo is also good to have. I have a few playlists on my iPod that I listen to while running. Also hanging posters with inspiring quotes and photos of fit people also help with motivation. And have a place for your bottle of water. Remember also to plug in some fans to circulate air. Even though I always seem to forget this, have a clean towel handy. You might also like to buy tools like heart-rate monitors and pedometres to track your progress.
  • A note on safety: Make sure your home gym will give you an effective workout and will also be a safe environment for you. I advise getting pets and small children out of the room while you’re exercising. Also, make sure the room is clean and uncluttered and there aren’t any tripping hazards or electrical overload concerns with your equipment. Read the safety manuals and use the equipment as intended. Clean your equipment regularly with disinfectant wipes, especially if many people are using the facilities.

The Olympic torch blew through my town today.

I found out by fluke that the Olympic Torch Relay for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games was actually coming through my little town of Saanichton, BC. And on Day 1 of all days. I had no idea when I was blogging about Centennial Park two days ago that I would be blogging about my neighborhood again so soon.

The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay began on October 30th, 2009 in Victoria, British Columbia. The Olympic Flame was originally lit in Olympia, Greece on October 22nd, 2009. The Olympic flame will crisscross Canada over the next 106 days, visiting 1000 communities.

I love the Olympics because the athletes show us the amazing strength and beauty of the human body and spirit. And the Games bring people together.

I like to think of myself as an athletic supporter ;>
