Dear Friends, Customers, and Clients:

I hope this blog post finds you well. I’m writing to let you know about what’s going on at Homespunspa Mobile Spa these days.

1)    Spa Parties

Since 2011, we’ve done many, many dozens of spa parties in all kinds of beautiful homes, hotels, schools, and offices in the Greater Victoria area, including Sooke, Sidney, and Lake Cowichan, and have met all kinds of wonderful people along the way.

So, if you’d like to host a spa party this autumn, just plump up those throw pillows and invite your friends over for some spa time, and we’ll do the rest!

Please visit Homespunspa.com for more info and email me at Homespunspa@shaw.ca to book your preferred date!

2)    Mobile Spa Services

Our spa services are designed to help people relax and manage stress and if one to one appointments are more your speed, we also offer facials, manicures, pedicures, relaxation massages, and chair massages for individuals. Having a spa service at home saves you time and money and you don’t have to worry about driving through traffic, finding a parking spot, or hiring a babysitter.

Please visit Homespunspa.com for more info and email me at Homespunspa@shaw.ca to book your spa appointment! Gift certificates are always available.

3)    Crystal Clear Coaching

Through thoughtful questions and active listening, a coach can offer support in areas such as health, lifestyle, life purpose, relationships, business, career, and spirituality, etc., and can help their clients produce extraordinary, fulfilling, and sustainable results.

If you’re considering the idea of working with a coach, I’d love to offer you a free Crystal Mapping Session. Using the wisdom of crystals, Crystal Mapping is a fun and interactive way to chart your own course in life. You’ll get a taste of what my style of coaching is like and from there, you can decide if you’d like to sign up for a series of coaching sessions with me as well.

Please visit MariaKoropecky.com for more info and email me at talktoacoach@gmail.com to schedule your free Crystal Mapping session!

4)    Stem Cell Nutrition

Supporting our own Stem Cell system is the key to good health and in my travels, I’ve found a new and unique aquatic-botanical product that supports our own release of bone-marrow stem cells. It’s a health supplement made from blue-green algae that comes from Klamath Lake, Oregon.

So, if you’d like to hear more about stem cell nutrition, to boost your health, to support your body’s own repair system, and get your hands on these supplements made by a company called, Cerule, please contact me, Maria, by email: talktoacoach@gmail.com.

You’re also welcome to visit my Cerule page: http://wellnessmaria.cerule.com/.

5)    Cruising into Wellness online store

As you can see, I’m passionate about wellness and I love helping people be proactive about their health. To further support my mobile spa clients and coaching clients with their health and wellness, I’ve opened an online store called Cruising into Wellness.

In store, you’ll find cruise wear, gemstones, jewellery, essential oils, colour bath pigments, tinted eyewear, Dr.’s Remedy nail polish, and so much more!

Please tell your friends about cruisingintowellness.com and if you’d like, make a purchase and I can bring your order to you at your next mobile spa appointment or spa party.

Check out my new wellness store and save 15% on the whole Medieval Thymes collection until September 30, 2017 @ www.cruisingintowellness.com.

And here’s a BONUS for being one of my friends, customers, and clients! -> FREE SHIPPING!

For all of my Canadian clients, (Homespunspa Mobile Spa, Crystal Clear Coaching, and Cerule supplements), I’m offering free shipping on your first-time order of Cruising into Wellness products!

Just enter the discount code HOMESPUN at checkout!

Anyway, that’s my wellness empire :) in a nutshell! Feel free to contact me if you’re interested in any of these wellness products or services. Hopefully, there’s something here that will help you.

Or, if you can think of anyone else who might appreciate what I have to offer, please forward my name to them. Thank you, I’d welcome your referrals. I’m at your service.

Sincerely,

Maria Koropecky

by Maria Koropecky, Wellness Coach

Here’s a calendar of Wellness and Health Awareness Days, Weeks, and Months for Canadians in 2016. Hopefully, these health promotion days will inspire you to practice self-care throughout the seasons. (For a deeper look at why self-care is so important, please read my blog post “Is Self-Care Selfish?”

On occasion, I’ve also included links to blog posts I’ve written about practicing on-going self-care that tie into these events and to my Homespunspa Mobile Spa and wellness coaching services. I’ve just realized how much writing I’ve been doing over the last few years! :)

As I’m compiling this list, I’m counting my blessings and I’m really grateful for my good health. With these special days and holidays as door openers, there are literally hundreds of ways we can all reach out to the people around us and celebrate life together.

Please visit Health Canada for active links to the websites of the health-related organizations. Also, if any of these organizations resonate strongly with you, consider volunteering, donating money, or participating in their events. As you can see, there are lots of needs to fill in this world, so help where you can (especially if you’re looking for your life’s purpose) to make the world a better place for all of us.

P.S. #1: As you read this list, you might find yourself saying, “There’s a day for that?” more than once. To answer your question, yes, yes, there is. Thank you to all of the creative and caring people out there who have worked so hard to make these dates official on local, national, and international calendars.

P.S. #2: I’d really love it if you’d share these blog posts via social media with your friends, family, co-workers, and clients. Thank you in advance.

P.S. #3: If you know of a special health- and wellness-related day, week, or month that I haven’t mentioned, please leave a comment and let us know about it and I’ll update the list.

P.S. #4: If you have a wellness blog like mine, here’s a editorial calendar with tons of ideas of what you can write about over the course of the year. You’re welcome!

By Maria Koropecky, Homespunspa owner

We have a new member on our team at Homespunspa Mobile Spa! Let me introduce you to Anna Pretto, a professional Airbrush Spray Tan Artist who is certified in Spray Tanning, Lash Extensions, and Hair Threading.

Anna will be offering spray tanning as part of our new Saturna Island Spa Party Package. Because you may have some questions about spray tanning, I thought it would be a nice idea to interview Anna to find out more about this fun spa service.

Hi Anna, I’m so excited that you have joined the Homespunspa Mobile Spa team and you will be giving spray tans as part of our new Saturna Island spa party package. Welcome!

I’d like to ask you some questions on behalf of our customers to introduce you to everyone and to show how spray tanning works.

1. What’s your favourite part of being a airbrush spray tan artist?

Seeing the immediate, great results that clients receive from a spray tan.

Spray Tan Artist, Anna

2. What lead you to become a professional airbrush spray tan artist?

Because of my love of all things esthetics, I wanted to add another service to my menu. I chose spray tanning because it is a healthy and safe alternative to traditional tanning methods and I feel proud that I can offer that to my clients.

3. Do you have any memories of tanning when you were growing up?

Yes! Being of Greek descent, every year that summer would come around I remember from even when I was a child that my olive skin would radiate when I started to tan.

4. What is a spray tan?

Sunless spray tanning is the spray/mist application of sunless tanning solution to desired areas of your body. When applied, DHA (the active ingredient in sunless tanning solution) reacts with the proteins in the skin’s superficial layer to form a golden brown colour. Your skin begins to darken 2 to 3 hours after application and reaches its peak colour within 24 hours. The colour will gradually fade through natural exfoliation, just like a tan from the sun.

5. What are the benefits of getting a spray tan?

There are lots of benefits with getting a spray tan:
An even, streak-free tan — the fine mist allows an even application all over, with no patchiness, and without going orange;
• Improved appearance — a spray tan helps you to look good year round, look thinner and healthier instantly, and it boosts self confidence;
• Even skin tone — A spray tan evens out skin tone and hides blemishes and imperfections, including stretch marks and varicose veins;
• Fast application — It’s fast: in just 15 minutes you can go from being pale and white to having a deep bronzed tan.

6. Is spray tanning safe?

Yes! DHA is non-toxic and non-carcinogenic. It’s made from sugar and is also used in the food industry. Spray tanning with DHA as the active tanning agent is approved and recommended by all the major medical associations and skin cancer associations around the world.

7. What spray tan product do you use and why did you choose this brand?

I use Aviva Natural Spray Tanning Solutions which is organic and is even used by celebrities. Here are the following reasons why we use only the safest of solutions:
1. Doctor formulated.
2. Natural-looking and long lasting.
3. Even-fading.
4. Oil-free.
5. Fragrance-free.
6. Alcohol-free.
7. Erythrulose-free.
8. Only made with FDA approved Ingredients.
9. All natural.
10. Composed of the highest quality, premium grade DHA.
11. Water-based.
12. Fast-drying.
13. Vegan.
14. Not tested on Animals.
15. Free of harsh dyes and chemicals.
16. Nut-free and allergen-free.
17. Non-comedogenic
18. Hypoallergenic.

8. That’s quite a list! Does the spray tanning solution give off an odour?

Aviva spray tan solution doesn’t give off any odour at all.

9. Can you customize the tints? Can I (the guest) choose how tanned I want to be?

Yes, I’ll evaluate your skin type to help you achieve your best sunless colour possible and I’ll consult with you to find what kind of colour you are looking to achieve.

10. Do the spa party guests have to remove all of their clothes to get their spray tan and how do you maintain privacy?

You can wear a swimsuit, undergarments or no clothes at all, whatever you’re comfortable with!

Also, here’s a photo of the spray tent –>. To maintain privacy and for those guests who are feeling modest, the tent can be placed in a more private area of the spa party venue.

11. Can the spray tan stain furniture and if so, is there anything you do to prevent that?

The spray tent keeps the spray inside the tent. For whatever reason, should there be any overspray on furniture, for example, it’s easily washed off with a wet cloth as it’s all organic. For the spa parties, we have some cloths on hand and would just clean things up right away.

12. How much space is required for you to set up your spray tanning tent?

Luckily, spray tanning doesn’t require much space at all! My mobile spray tanning tent can be set up virtually anywhere while protecting anything outside of it from spray.

13. What’s the difference between Air Brush Tanning and Spray Booths?

Booth – whatever your body size or height, a spray booth will spray you with the exact same motion and amount of spray.

Airbrush – The amount of spray can be adjusted and tailored to your body type and for your needs.
• Airbrush tanning is much more accurate than booth sprays;
• Airbrushing can be done in the comfort of your home;
• What a booth does in 30-60 seconds, airbrushing takes between 10-15 minutes;
• Airbrush tanning allows for a precise application of the solution evenly across your body, ensuring the best results;
• Airbrush tanning is also cleaner than booth sprays;
• Airbrushing tends to last longer;
• Barrier creams are not necessary;
• No head caps or booties are needed.

14. Is there anything the spa party guests have to do before getting their spray tan?

• Wax or shave 24 hours before your spray tan as this will allow the pores to close before your tan;
• Do not apply deodorants, moisturizers or perfumes the day of your appointment or spa party as these can prevent proper absorption of the tanning solution.
• Exfoliate 24 hours before to remove any dead skin cells.

15. What if the spa party guests don’t have a chance to exfoliate their skin before the spa party?

If by chance the skin hasn’t been exfoliated 24 hours prior to the tan, we have the option to exfoliate at the time of the tan at the spa party; however, I cannot guarantee that the results would be as good, as the skin hasn’t had a chance to recover.

Yes, we have an exfoliation treatment option and make-up removal option built into the spa party theme (instead of getting the chair massage) in case someone needs to take those steps before getting their spray tan at the spa party.

16. Are there any contraindications (like eczema or some sort of skin rash, burn, scar or health condition) that will prevent you from applying the spray tan to someone?

No. In an organic spray tan such as this one, wrinkles, dry skin, irritation, rashes and other skin problems are diminished. The spray binds the moisture in the skin and repairs skin cells that have been damaged by harsh sun rays. It eliminates the formation of dried-out skin which normally occurs after traditional spray tanning.

17. How long will the spray tan last?

Your body is always shedding dead skin cells. This is why even a natural sun tans fade over a few days. Spray tanning affects only the outer skin layer, so just like a natural sun tan the spray tan fades as your skin cells are shed. Your spray tan will usually last between 5 to 10 days.

18. Do you have any tips on making the spray tan last longer?

1. Bring loose, baggy clothing to wear after your appointment. Tight clothing will rub against your skin and may cause patches.
2. To avoid strap marks, I recommend you do not wear your bra after you appointment, until your tan has fully developed and you have washed it off.
3. Bring flip-flops to wear after your appointment, as shoes/socks will cause the tan to rub off/leave patches.
4. Wait at least 8 hours before showering after your spray tan.
5. Moisturize with an oil free moisturizer.

19. Wow! We’ve covered a lot of territory in this interview, Anna. Of course, people may still have more questions and if so, how can they reach you?

For more information about Anna and spray tans, please visit Lash and Glow or call 250-857-7837 and be sure to say, “I’m looking forward to hosting a Saturna Island spa party!”

And if you’re ready to book your Saturna Island Spa Party theme package right away, please call Maria at Homespunspa Mobile Spa at 250-812-3487 or email at homespunspa@shaw.ca.

Thank you, Anna, I’m sure spa lovers from Sooke to Sidney will enjoy our Saturna Island Spa Party Theme Package. I think adding spray tanning to the Homespunspa mobile spa menu is a great idea and the spa parties are going to be a blast!

First of all — Big Announcement! Homespunspa has just launched a sister website to www.homespunspa.com. Introducing www.homespunspa-mobilespa.com. Our new micro website has been especially designed for the corporate market — just in time for the Christmas holiday season — and we’re all set to spruce up holiday parties in living rooms and boardrooms across Victoria, BC.

Cheers to spa parties!

With only 61 days and counting until Christmas, the office holiday party is fast approaching. Mobile spa services add sparkle to any party and are hands down, by far, a more memorable “Season’s Greetings” than chocolates, flowers, or a turkey for the holidays.

Homespunspa Mobile Spa is set to provide mini spa services during office holiday parties in the workplace and corporations can now request Homespunspa Mobile Spa to come to their office so staff can enjoy:

  • chair massages;
  • aromatherapy massages;
  • hand treatments including mini mani’s and hand massages;
  • foot treatments including mini pedi’s and foot massages;
  • and facials.

Party-planning committees can rest easy knowing everyone will be pleased as punch with this year’s spa party theme and to make things even more festive for the holiday staff party, Homespunspa can offer candy-cane-scented foot massages, pumpkin spice foot soaks and seasonal nail polish colours.

Recently, Homespunspa Mobile Spa was invited to give spa services for 20 women at a private birthday party. While the mini facials and mini massages were held in a quieter room, those receiving mini mani’s and mini pedi’s on the covered and heated patio had a lovely view of the ocean. “I just wanted to thank you again for today. You were a pleasure to work with and I’m very happy with how it all turned out,” said Jasmein Sran, spa party guest and organizer.

Also, Homespunspa Mobile Spa was hired to deliver spa services at a conference at a local hotel and gave chair massages as well as mini mani’s and mini pedi’s over the course of two afternoons. “We chose Homespunspa because [they] replied promptly to our call and were able to offer nail services as well as chair massages and that set [them] apart,” said Karen Walter, conference organizer.

Homespunspa Enterprises was established in 2001 and the mobile spa division was added in 2011. Promoting employee relaxation through our corporate mobile spa services, Homespunspa is like a breath of fresh air for your home and office.

If you’d like more information on this topic or to book a spa party, please call 250-812-3487 or email: homespunspa@shaw.ca. Happy holidays!

My Interview with Helen Hodgson of Serve the Goddess Mobile Spa

I first met Helen Hodgson thanks to a “mobile spa Google alert” I received in my inbox in 2011. She had been interviewed by the “Massage Nerd” and was promoting her 5-week teleclass on “How to Create your own Mobile Spa Business” and I was compelled to click on the link. I’m so glad I did! We arranged to talk on Skype and soon I signed up for her teleclass which was to start in early 2012.

I count meeting Helen as one of the bigger blessings in my life because I dare say, Homespunspa Mobile Spa wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for her guidance. She was the first person to show me the beauty of mobile spas and spa parties and has introduced me to many like-minded mobile spa professionals across North America that I keep in touch with on a regular basis through our forum.

Helen is a licensed massage therapist in the state of California and a member of the Association of Bodywork and Massage Professionals. Helen is a certified trainer and the California state coordinator of the Emergency Response Massage International Team which is responsible for sending out massage therapists to provide massage therapy to First Responders at disaster sites. Helen was also elected to the position of Vice President of The Mobile Spa Network which unites mobile spa professionals worldwide.

Helen was voted one of the best massage therapists by Allure magazine and her TV and radio appearances include NBC, E Channel, Discovery Channel, MTV and Sirius Satellite Radio, among others.

Helen and her team of 50 massage therapists, estheticians and nail technicians, provide massage and spa services in homes, offices and at special events for individuals, couples and groups.

I’m happy to introduce my mobile spa mentor and friend, Helen Hodgson.

Helen Hodgson (far right) with her Serve the Goddess Mobile Spa Team.

Maria: Hello Helen. Do you have any memories of spas when you were growing up?

HELEN: Yes, I do! I am originally from England and grew up in a Victorian spa town — Harrogate, North Yorkshire. My friends and I would spend the day down in the Royal Baths and enjoy the Turkish Baths, steam, sauna and a “loafer and hose down” from one of the attendants on hand. I can still remember how clean my skin felt and I’d be so relaxed.

Maria: That sounds amazing, Helen. What’s a “loafer and a hose down?” :)

HELEN: The attendant (in a white coat) would exfoliate with a loofah mitt and hose us down with warm water from a water pipe. It sounds kind of crude, I know, but it was part of the experience.

Maria: That sounds like a great question and answer for a Spa Trivia quiz! As a frontrunner in the mobile spa world, what year did you create your Serve the Goddess Mobile Spa?

HELEN: The year, 2000.

Serve the Goddess Mobile Spa was established in 2000. Photo courtesy of Helen Hodgson.

Maria: Do you still have any customers from those early days?

HELEN: Funny thing is, yes. My longest standing clients are from 18 years ago and I see them still every two weeks. I’ve been to their sons’ bar mitzvahs and they came to my wedding. They are like family.

Maria: What lead you to open Serve the Goddess Mobile Spa in the first place?

HELEN: I’d hear time and time again from groups of women coming in for a spa day together that they’d be in separate rooms. They wanted to be together as they were usually celebrating a special occasion. This lead me to create my mobile spa so they could all be in the same room receiving spa services.

Friends enjoying spa time together is what Serve the Goddess Mobile Spa is all about. Photo courtesy of Helen Hodgson.

Maria: What is the best part about your work?

HELEN: Knowing my team and I had made a positive difference in the client’s day and being part of the client’s special memories.

Everyone is enjoying spa treatments of their choice at the same time. Photo courtesy of Helen Hodgson.

Maria: What is your favourite spa treatment on your spa menu to give? And what is your favourite spa treatment on your spa menu to receive?

HELEN: I was hoping you’d ask. It’s the Aphrodite’s Delight — which is a bridal favourite — and it’s a soothing aromatherapy massage using oils of tangerine, clary sage, black pepper, nutmeg, patchouli, ylang ylang, myrrh and vetiver. It’s followed by Pedicure and Foot Rejuvenating Treatment.

Maria: I love those essential oils and am curious to know how they smell as a blend. Do you like spa music and do you have any favourite spa songs on your playlist?

HELEN: I do and I’ve discovered I relax best to sounds of water. One of my favourite albums is Healing Waters by Dean Evenson and another is Ocean Dreams.

What colour of nail polish will I pick today? Photo Courtesy of Helen Hodgson.

Maria: I’m going to have to check those out in iTunes and then add them to my ever-growing Homespunspa playlist. If you were to host your own spa party (and I hope you do from time to time :) ), what spa snacks would you serve and can we have a recipe?

HELEN: I hosted my very own Bridal shower spa party for my family when I got married three years ago. I served fruit and cheese plates, chopped vegetables and humus and to drink, I served glasses of Strawberry Kiwi Watermelon Fusion Spa Water.

Maria: Running your own business can be stressful at times: What are some of the self-care rituals that you do for yourself everyday to keep yourself healthy?

HELEN: I have an exercise trainer two times a week and I take hour-long walks down at the beach three times a week. I love the feel of the ocean breezes on my skin and hearing the waves. In fact, as caregivers, we need to practice what we preach to our clients and make time for regular down time. And I do get a sports style massage once a month and a monthly pedicure. If I am doing a lot of massage, I have to keep my nails short, so I don’t usually get manicures. And I am sure he won’t mind me telling you, but my hubby has filed my fingernails before — lol.

Maria: That’s sweet. What makes you smile?

HELEN: The simple things in life really… singing, catching a sunset, when my cat climbs into my lap and waking up with my hubby on a cozy Sunday morning.

Maria: My cat makes me smile, too. How do you see mobile spas, massages, and wellness in 5 years (2018)?

Mobile spa parties are a great way to catch up with old friends. Photo courtesy of Helen Hodgson.

HELEN: What I’ve realized is more and more people are offering spa services these days. All of the hotels didn’t use to offer spa services and they didn’t have a spa, but once they realized how popular spas are, they started to think, ‘oh my goodness, we have to offer a spa.’ The future is: you have to be offering some sort of spa services to people.

Maria: So, spas — including mobile spas — are not some sort of passing trend?

HELEN: Absolutely not. Mobile spas are a convenient way to offer spa services to people in hospitals; to people who are travelling and are staying in high-end villas; to people attending charity events and product launches [to name a few]. Spa services are always perceived as high value, especially for people who wouldn’t normally treat themselves.

This courtyard is the perfect backdrop for a Serve the Goddess Mobile Spa party. Photo courtesy of Helen Hodgson.

Maria: Yes, I often find that people make appointments with me on behalf of someone else.

HELEN: Another group of people who appreciate mobile spas are the elderly because they’re living [independently] in their homes longer. We do house calls which is like going back to a time when that was the norm. Everything is more personal and you get to develop relationships with people and give them more personalized care and attention.

Maria: I love that — we do house calls!

Let's not forget how much the teens and pre-teens enjoy spa services and how their enthusiasm will influence the future of spas and wellness. Photo courtesy of Helen Hodgson.

HELEN: My hope is that alternative medicine is available to more people. Even though I’ve been providing mobile services for over 13 years, I am still amazed that people aren’t aware that the service can be delivered to them for their convenience.

Maria: What are you most excited about in your life right now?

HELEN: Last year, I started teaching other massage and spa professionals how to start their own mobile spa business and I wrote an eBook. And I am expanding Serve The Goddess to provide day-long retreats. Maybe we’ll have to do another interview so I can tell you all about that.

Maria: Yes, I’d love to learn more about your retreats. Keep us posted! If someone wants to contact you for a mobile spa service in L.A. with Serve the Goddess or U Knead Massage or if they’d like more information on how they can create their own mobile spa business, how can they reach you?

and I welcome your calls.

Maria: Thank you very much for your time, Helen, and for sharing some fun photos. I really enjoyed our conversation and I look forward to meeting you in person some day soon.

Spa Life Magazine, Home Is Where The Spa Is

As many of you know, earlier this year, I went to Toronto, Ontario on a Wellness Tour and one of the highlights, definitely, was when I was approached, out of the blue, by Lauren Nesbitt-Baggerman for an interview in Spa Life Magazine.

Of course, I said “Yes, I’d love to be featured in your magazine.” What a lovely, unexpected opportunity.

Lauren was working on an article for their upcoming Romance edition and wanted to introduce her readers to the beauty of mobile spas.  She specifically wanted to know, “What is the benefit of at home spa treatments and how does Homespunspa deliver spa treatments for couples.”

At that time, Valentine’s Day was just around the corner and it was easy for me to answer her questions. If you’d like to know my answers, please click on the accompanying image — I’m first up in the article. Alternatively, you can download a pdf copy of the article, “Home is where the spa is, mobile spas come to you,” at  SpaLife-Romance2013-HomeisWheretheSpaIs.

I love doing interviews. I love connecting with people and sharing information and having great conversations. If you’d like to arrange an interview with me like Lauren did about mobile spas, esthetics and/or wellness for your magazine, book, blog, radio show, tv show, youtube video and the like, please send me an email and I’d be happy to chat.

Spa Life Magazine is published by Harworth Publishing in Guelph Ontario. Thank you, Lauren, for the great article.

SPARTY! So Glamorous!

Have you ever wondered what it’s like behind the scenes at a red-carpet event like the Grammy’s and the Tony’s? Well, these days, in the midst of all of the lights, camera, and action, the award-winning celebrities have been trading in their designer gowns and tuxes for terry robes and slippers and are sipping champagne cocktails and wine spritzers, and are soaking in revitalizing manicures, pedicures, shaves and massages – all thanks to SPARTY!

SPARTY!, (“Spa” plus “Party” – two of my favourite words),  transforms the behind-the-curtain, backstage into a stylish, multi-room spa and takes the ordinary, serene and quiet day spa experience to a whole new planet.

If you’re planning on hosting a spa party this summer and are looking for some ideas on how to make your spa party extra special and more glamorous, I’ve got a real treat for you today. I’ve recently sat down with Alexis Ufland, owner of SPARTY!, the hottest star trend in Hollywood, to talk about the art of throwing a star-studded spa party. Here’s our interview:

Maria: How did you come up with the SPARTY! idea?

ALEXIS: I hosted a bachelorette weekend for my best friend and we did a spa day at one of the top spas in NYC. We changed into robes and slippers and then all separated for our spa treatments. When it was over, we realized the best part of the day was the 10-15 minutes when we were all together in the spa lounge. Hence SPARTY! was born. I wanted to create an event where there was more spa lounge time and less time apart in treatment rooms.

Maria: Can you paint a picture of what it’s like to be at a SPARTY!, backstage, behind the scenes, at a star-studded, red-carpet event?

ALEXIS: We usually are backstage at Star Studded events a couple days before the night of the actual event, so the energy is exciting and fun. The celebrities are coming in from all over the world and when they get to the SPARTY! area, they are pretty happy to find a place where they can get a massage and a drink!

A waiter carries "Spartinis" at a SPARTY! in NYC. Photo courtesy of SPARTY!

Maria: Are there any highlights of any SPARTY!’s that you can share with us? What was the most memorable SPARTY! venue so far?

ALEXIS: We did a SPARTY! for Shaquille O’Neal’s birthday party in Miami. It was a “Scarface” theme and we had to create the spa to look like a scene from the movie. It was so fun, all the guests were really into it and it was a great night.

Men like mani's too. Photo courtesy of SPARTY!

Maria: What are you doing during the SPARTY’s? Are you taking photos, mingling with the guests, overhearing interesting conversations :) , dealing with unexpected glitches, performing the services etc.?

ALEXIS: You will usually find me filling up empty wine glasses!

Sharing a laugh with friends. Photo courtesy of SPARTY!

Maria: What is it about wearing a terry robe at a party that makes things more fun?

ALEXIS: Hanging out with your girlfriends in a robe is really what sets the mood for a relaxing fun event. The goal of SPARTY! is to allow guests to drink a glass of wine, chat with your girlfriends and get a spa treatment all at the same time.

Sharing a laugh on the couch at a spa party. Photo courtesy of SPARTY!

Maria: Can you give some tips on how to make a spa party extra special and more luxurious?

ALEXIS: The goal is to allow girls to eat, drink, lounge, gossip and get spa treatments all at the same time. When putting together your party, keep this goal in mind when planning every detail. Girls love to lounge – make sure there are enough couches, chaises etc. Make sure all food is bite size finger foods so the guests don’t mess up their manicure. Get large enough robes so that everyone feels comfortable. Add some non-spa-related activities like Tarot Card Readers to mix up the energy. Make sure you have a lot of booze!

Take the spa party outside by the pool this summer. Photo courtesy of SPARTY!

Maria: Thank you, Alexis, for your time and stories and for sending such fun photos from your recent SPARTY’s. I’m sure many people will be inspired to have their own spa parties this summer.

I hope this chat gives you a taste of how much fun spa parties are. If you’re travelling to New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Dallas, Washington DC, Boston, Philadelphia and San Francisco this year, make sure you get yourself invited to a SPARTY! Go to www.spa-party.com for more info. Maybe you’ll rub elbows with stars like Megan Mullaly, Kim Cattrall, Omar Epps and Justin Timberlake – and if you do, let me know!

And if you’re staying in Victoria, BC, this summer, keep Homespunspa Mobile Spa in mind for your upcoming spa party. We’ll make sure to unfurl the red carpet and glam it up for your special day.

Does Being Pregnant Make Your Nails Grow Faster?

Yesterday, Homespunspa Mobile Spa was invited to give mini mani’s to new mothers at the MotherFest at Mothering Touch. It was a pre-Mother’s Day mini mani marathon for me and Ranjit and the nail polish was flying!

The most popular colour choice? Good ol’ Lucky Lucky Lavender. See if you can spot the bottle in the photo below.

Homespunspa's collection of nail polish colours.

Homespunspa's collection of nail polish colours.

The new mothers brought their babies to the event and had a choice of treating themselves to all kinds of pampering services from Thai Massage to Belly Painting to a Photoshoot. At one point in the afternoon, there must have been at least 60 babies in the store at once. It was truly an honour and a really joyful experience for me to be so close to so many infants at the same time. One was only three weeks old! So cute!

Anyway, back to the question at hand: Does Being Pregnant Make Your Nails Grow Faster?

As each of the women sat in front of me to get their nails filed and polished, I asked many of them, just out of curiosity, if they’re finding a difference in their nails now that they’re pregnant. The surprising answer was “Yes” and most, if not all of them, had noticed how much stronger their nails were and how much faster they grew while they were pregnant. One woman said, “It must be the prenatal vitamins we’re taking.” :)

Prenatal vitamins are designed to help ensure better health for fetus and mother. These vitamins and supplements contain high concentrations of folic acid, calcium and iron and low amounts of vitamin A. Some brands also include Omega-3’s and DHA.

As it turns outs, it’s not the prenatal vitamins that make the nails grow stronger and faster — it’s the pregnancy hormones that are key. During pregnancy, the woman’s body starts to produce a bigger batch of hormones than usual and these hormones have a number of tasks and responsibilities. For one, they boost circulation and send a constant deluge of vital nutrients to the skin, which in turn makes nails grow faster.

So that answers that.

If you’re a new mom and can’t keep up with trimming your nails during this special time and want a little treat for yourself, please call me, Maria, at Homespunspa. I’d be happy to come to your home and give you your choice of a manicure, pedicure, facial or massage at your convenience. And the beauty of a mobile spa is…you don’t have to worry about getting a babysitter because you’ll be within earshot of your little ones the whole time. And why not invite some friends over and make it a spa party?

Anyway, I’d like to take this moment to wish all of the moms and mother figures out there and especially my own dear mother, a very happy Mother’s Day. Cheers to you!

Are you planning to celebrate a special occasion soon, like a birthday party, bridal shower, wedding, anniversary or seasonal holiday and would like to do something fun and unique for your bff’s?

How about hosting a spa party?

If a spa party sounds like a great idea to you, here’s a checklist that will help make the job easier:

  1. Pick a date & time: Choose a date that works for most, if not all of your guests. Spa parties usually last no more than 3 hours, so if you have plans before or after your spa party, (like dinner at a restaurant or a golf game or a night on the town) pick a time that gives you some wiggle room. There’s no point in adding stress to your special spa day by rushing to the next event.
  2. Pick a venue: Spa parties can be held virtually anywhere like a hotel room or office but oftentimes your home is best. Just make sure you have enough open space to accommodate your party guests and anyone else you may have hired (like caterers, massage therapists, yoga instructors) to help you with your party.
  3. Decide on a party budget: I know, “budget” and “party” don’t sound good together but it’s a good idea to know what you want to spend ahead of time and stay in that ballpark. Overspending on impulse purchases will dampen your fun in the long run and having a budget will keep you on track.
  4. Send invitations: Nowadays, you can either send your invitations electronically like through email or you can create an event on Facebook or you can hand deliver your invitations door to door. It’s up to you. On your invitations, make sure you ask your guests which types of spa services they’d prefer and let your guests know to bring things like: flip flops, if they’re getting a pedicure; pj’s; bathrobes; a bathing suit for the hot tub; a potluck item to share or cash, if you want them to pay for their own spa services and tip.
  5. Get a head count: Now that you have your guest list and everyone has said “Yes, I’ll be there with bells on,” know how many guests will be attending your spa party.
  6. Hire a local mobile spa company like Homespunspa: Mobile spa companies are popping up all over the place and I’m sure there’s a good one in your city. And if you happen to live in Victoria, BC, then please call or email Homespunspa Mobile Spa. We’d be thrilled to help make your spa party extra special and stress-free.
  7. Choose spa services to offer at your party: Mobile spas can deliver all kinds of spa services like manicures, pedicures, facials and massages to your guests. At Homespunspa, we have designed a mini menu of 30-minute spa treatments for spa parties which lets guests get pampered and still participate in the party.
  8. Prepare spa snacks and beverages: Of course, what’s a spa party without food and drinks? I recommend serving crispy kale chips and refreshing cucumber water.
  9. Create your spa music playlist: I’ve been collecting spa music for over 20 years, long before I became a lover of all things spa and an esthetician, and I love, love, love the Homespunspa playlist. Regardless of whether you want something quiet and relaxing or something more pop and upbeat in the background, having music will add whole nother :) dimension to your spa party.
  10. Design your spa space: It’s time to create a spa environment. First move your furniture and make room for the different spa stations. You want to create a space that allows for people to move around freely. You might also like to create some private areas for the quieter spa treatments. And don’t forget to vapourize some essential oils into the air to enhance the spa mood.
  11. Decorate your space: If you can swing it, try adding some spa-chic elements, like a water feature, a low-burning fire in the fire place, smooth stones with inspiring words painted on them, lit candles of all sizes, throw pillows, plushy white towels folded just so, waffle bathrobes with slippers, and leafy tropical plants with big flowers to your décor.
  12. What about pets and other family members? I love family pets, especially cats, but sometimes they may not be the ideal guests at your spa party. Figure out what to do with your pets ahead of time so they don’t cause a distraction. And if there are family members or roommates that will not be participating in the spa party, (like husbands during a bridal shower) give them lots of notice so they can make alternate plans.
  13. Decide if there will be games and/or craft activities during the party: Some people like to play spa games while others like to encourage everyone to do a short craft project during their parties. If you want to do some spa-themed crafts and use essential oils, find some home spa recipes and try making your own perfumes, massage oil blends or bath salts. These activities are completely optional but if people are up for it, they might add some fun to the spa party.
  14. Collect and package party favours: Once the spa party starts winding down and everyone has received their pampering spa treatments, you might want to send your guests home with some party favours (or a loot bag, as I like to say). You can keep it simple, like a bottle of nail polish, or go all out with travel-sized shampoos, conditioners, lotions, lip balms, eye shadows, soaps, candles, assorted tea bags, packets of chocolate covered almonds, costume jewellery…whatever you want. You can always ask your mobile spa ahead of time if they’d also like to contribute some free product samples or coupons to the party favour bags.
  15. Clean up: Your spa party was a success and you can rest assured your friends had a good time. Once the mobile spa leaves and takes all of their equipment and supplies with them, clean up will be a snap. You may even like the furniture the way it is and not feel the need to move it back. :)

I hope this checklist for a successful spa party helps you plan the best spa party ever. And I hope you include Homespunspa in your next spa party. Please leave a comment if you have anything to add and please share this with your friends if you have a spa party in the works right now.
