Dear Friends, Customers, and Clients:

I hope this blog post finds you well. I’m writing to let you know about what’s going on at Homespunspa Mobile Spa these days.

1)    Spa Parties

Since 2011, we’ve done many, many dozens of spa parties in all kinds of beautiful homes, hotels, schools, and offices in the Greater Victoria area, including Sooke, Sidney, and Lake Cowichan, and have met all kinds of wonderful people along the way.

So, if you’d like to host a spa party this autumn, just plump up those throw pillows and invite your friends over for some spa time, and we’ll do the rest!

Please visit Homespunspa.com for more info and email me at Homespunspa@shaw.ca to book your preferred date!

2)    Mobile Spa Services

Our spa services are designed to help people relax and manage stress and if one to one appointments are more your speed, we also offer facials, manicures, pedicures, relaxation massages, and chair massages for individuals. Having a spa service at home saves you time and money and you don’t have to worry about driving through traffic, finding a parking spot, or hiring a babysitter.

Please visit Homespunspa.com for more info and email me at Homespunspa@shaw.ca to book your spa appointment! Gift certificates are always available.

3)    Crystal Clear Coaching

Through thoughtful questions and active listening, a coach can offer support in areas such as health, lifestyle, life purpose, relationships, business, career, and spirituality, etc., and can help their clients produce extraordinary, fulfilling, and sustainable results.

If you’re considering the idea of working with a coach, I’d love to offer you a free Crystal Mapping Session. Using the wisdom of crystals, Crystal Mapping is a fun and interactive way to chart your own course in life. You’ll get a taste of what my style of coaching is like and from there, you can decide if you’d like to sign up for a series of coaching sessions with me as well.

Please visit MariaKoropecky.com for more info and email me at talktoacoach@gmail.com to schedule your free Crystal Mapping session!

4)    Stem Cell Nutrition

Supporting our own Stem Cell system is the key to good health and in my travels, I’ve found a new and unique aquatic-botanical product that supports our own release of bone-marrow stem cells. It’s a health supplement made from blue-green algae that comes from Klamath Lake, Oregon.

So, if you’d like to hear more about stem cell nutrition, to boost your health, to support your body’s own repair system, and get your hands on these supplements made by a company called, Cerule, please contact me, Maria, by email: talktoacoach@gmail.com.

You’re also welcome to visit my Cerule page: http://wellnessmaria.cerule.com/.

5)    Cruising into Wellness online store

As you can see, I’m passionate about wellness and I love helping people be proactive about their health. To further support my mobile spa clients and coaching clients with their health and wellness, I’ve opened an online store called Cruising into Wellness.

Don’t Let Jet Lag Keep You Grounded

I’ve got travel on my mind!

First, with the Summer Olympics being a big draw, the International Olympic Committee has predicted that 480,000+ tourists and sports fans will travel from all corners of the earth to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in August, 2016. That’s a lot of zig-zagging across the planet!

Also, many of my friends are currently travelling for their summer vacations, getting one last trip in before school starts, to all kinds of wonderful places all over the world, and I love hearing about their adventures.

As for me, I’m in the process of planning a Transformation is Possible Cruise to Alaska in August, 2017, which will be all about coaching and wellness, which I’ll tell you more about in the coming months, because you’re invited to join me!

Anyway, with all of this talk of travel, I thought it would be nice to write a blog post on how to minimize Jet Lag so everyone can enjoy their trips more fully.

don't let jet lag keep you grounded.

I don’t want Jet Lag to keep anyone grounded.

The formal name for Jet lag is “desynchronosis” which is a fancy way of saying, “out of sync” which makes sense. It’s also called “flight fatigue.”

Jet Lag is not fun. Thank goodness it’s only temporary! This sleep disorder happens when our body’s natural circadian rhythms aren’t matching up with the local time and the delay can feel quite debilitating.

Symptoms of Jet Lag include:

  1. fatigue
  2. digestive disorders such as constipation, diarrhea, and nausea,
  3. dehydration,
  4. anxiety,
  5. disorientation, confusion, and inability to concentrate,
  6. dizziness & grogginess,
  7. headache,
  8. irritability,
  9. sweating,
  10. general malaise,
  11. mild depression, and
  12. insomnia, disrupted sleep, and irregular sleep patterns.

Depending on whether you’re heading West or East and the time of day you’re travelling, it takes about one day for each time zone you’ve crossed to realign your body clock to your new (or regular) time zone.

Although some Jet Lag is unavoidable while traveling great distances by airplane, it’s still possible to keep disruption to a minimum and get the circadian rhythms humming again sooner rather than later.

9 Tips to Minimize Jet Lag

1. Stay hydrated:

Cabin air can be very dehydrating and being dehydrated is already uncomfortable. Symptoms from dehydration overlap with symptoms of Jet Lag and you don’t want to amplify your Jet Lag by starting off as weak and dehydrated. So, even if you don’t feel thirsty, drink at least one glass of water for every hour you’re in the air. Also, avoid drinking too much caffeine or alcohol during your flight.

2. Use ginger:

Ginger is good for nausea and headaches so if you can, bring some ginger essential oil with you (perhaps in a pump spray bottle), or drink ginger ale or ginger tea, or eat some Sushi with pickled ginger before your flight at the airport.

3. Consider melatonin:

To ease your transition to the new time zone and to reset your body clock, consider taking melatonin, either as a nonprescription drug or from a food source like cherries. Please see my blog post, “Top of your day with a cherry”

4. Try Reflexology:

Speaking of melatonin, you can also use Reflexology to stimulate the production of this sleep-regulating hormone by applying pressure to the Pineal gland points on your hands, feet, or ears. To work this reflexology point on the feet, use your index finger and press in and down on the outside edge (or medial side) of your big toe, just above the midway bump at the base of the nail.

5. Get some pre-flight life coaching:

If you’re feeling anxious about flying and are a nervous traveller, book a session with a life coach like me before your trip. A coach can be very calming and reassuring. On top of that, voicing your concerns and imagining a smooth flight without any complications, including Jet Lag, ahead of time, will also work wonders.

6. Wear gemstone jewellery:

Travellers have been carrying healing crystals for their protective and healing properties on their journeys for thousands of years. Wearing gemstone and crystal jewellery is an excellent and easy way to ensure a safe and pleasant voyage. Crystal jewellery also looks nice and makes a great conversation starter. I recommend Turquoise to safeguard your possessions and to facilitate communication, Yellow Jasper to calm nausea or motion sickness, and silvery-black Hematite to help get rid of Jet Lag. Of course, there’s also the perfectly-named Jet stone which offers protection, helps clear negativity, and brings good luck.

7. Get up and stretch:

Every few hours, take about 15 minutes to stretch your muscles from head to toe. Roll your neck, shoulders, wrists, and ankles and twist at your waist from side to side. All the better if you practice yoga. You can stretch while seated of course, but it’s even better when you get up mid flight and walk up and down the aisle a few times to get your circulation going and stretch while standing up.

8. Go outside when you can:

Once you arrive, spend time outside in nature and then you’ll receive natural cues from the environment that will help your body reset itself to your new surroundings. Also, if you happen to catch some rays, you’ll also get some Vitamin D which will help boost your immunity. Please read my blog post, “It’s Vitamin D Day”.

9. Get a massage:

As a massage practitioner, I recommend getting a massage to minimize the amount of time it takes to recover from Jet Lag. Nowadays, you can get a chair massage at the airport or you can book a more extravagant massage at a spa at your destination. Either way, a massage will help you release tension and sleep better at night.

I hope these 9 tips will help you reduce and even avoid Jet Lag on your next trip. And if you have any tips to share, feel free to add your comments about minimizing Jet Lag below. Thanks!

It’s Never Too Late To Transform Your Life

Who else wants to transform their life?

In my books, as long as you’re above ground, no matter how old you are, it’s never too late to transform your life because everyday is literally a fresh start. If you’re ready and willing to create a healthy lifestyle and experience more out of life and if you’re serious and committed to turning over a new leaf and embarking on a journey of transformation, then please consider working with a professional wellness coach like me. Having a coach on your team is empowering!

What would you like to talk about?

Coaching helps people create an amazing life. As a Wellness Coach, I’m here to listen and ask thoughtful questions and to gently draw out your insights so you can intuitively come up with your own answers. It’s not about fixing anything or telling people what to do.

I also know how to guide the process and structure our coaching conversation in a way that follows how the brain works. You’ll gain clarity about your imagined future, know what you’d like to focus on, and what you’d like to take away from our conversation. Then we’ll explore what’s supporting you, what’s in your way, your beliefs, etc., and within the hour, you’ll have more self-awareness and acceptance and you’ll feel empowered to move forward in your life. It’s quite exhilarating!

We can talk about your health and wellness, relationships, family, career, spirituality, and life goals, and we can work on things like losing weight, quitting smoking, and managing stress.

Also, unlike talking with therapists or counselors, as a Wellness Coach, I won’t dwell on your past and try to figure out how you got here. Coaching is all about starting from where you are now and looking towards your future.

Working closely with a Wellness Coach like me can really speed up the process of how quickly you’ll get results.

You’ll gain:

  • confidence,
  • new healthy habits,
  • clarity,
  • self-awareness, and
  • eventually you’ll have the tools to fly solo and approach life from an authentic and safe place.

In our wellness coaching sessions, we’ll work together to…
* Create a crystal clear vision for your ultimate life so you know exactly what you want, where you’re headed, and what you need to do to make it happen.
* Uncover hidden challenges that may be sabotaging (or at least slowing down) your progress in your ability to make positive changes that last.
* And you’ll leave our coaching sessions feeling renewed, re-energized, and inspired to finally achieve the transformation you seek, once and for all.

Each Wellness Coaching session is unique and as the client, you decide which topics we talk about. If you need to talk, I’m here to listen, and I’ll create a safe space for you to express your thoughts and feelings.

Wellness Coaching can be done either over the phone, on Skype, or in person, and each coaching session lasts around an hour.

An entire coaching program with me includes an initial evaluation followed by 12, pre-paid coaching sessions that you can schedule weekly, biweekly, or monthly, (depending on your preferred pace), and our coaching relationship can continue for 3, 6, or 12 months and beyond.

Here’s your chance to get the ball rolling…

Transformation is possible at any age

Maria, Wellness Coach

I’m living proof. When I was 45, I was feeling really stuck in my life. I wasn’t where I wanted to be. After many years of tolerating mediocre, I had finally reached a point where enough was enough and I was going to do something about it. I decided to sign up for the Self-Actualized Coach and Mentor training program at the Rayner Institute. It changed my life in countless ways for the better and I’m forever grateful to all of the wonderful coaches I’ve met through the school and all of the coaching and training I’ve received over the year.

I’ve rolled up my sleaves, and have invested many hours in myself doing the work, and have reached some personal goals like losing over 25 pounds and publishing my Creating Wellness ebook on Amazon. I really love coaching people and now I’m ready to pay it forward to you and it would be my honour to walk beside you on your journey. I know coaching works and I’d love to be there for your transformation as well!

It all starts with a Consultation

Your transformation can start today with a simple email to me, Maria, at homespunspa at shaw dot ca and from there we’ll book your free, 30-minute, “Transform Your Life” wellness coaching consultation appointment.

I’m looking forward to hearing from you! Sincerely, Wellness Coach, Maria

Here’s a calendar of Wellness and Health Awareness Days, Weeks, and Months for Canadians in 2016. Hopefully, these health promotion days will inspire you to practice self-care throughout the seasons. (For a deeper look at why self-care is so important, please read my blog post “Is Self-Care Selfish?”

On occasion, I’ve also included links to blog posts I’ve written about practicing on-going self-care that tie into these events and to my Homespunspa Mobile Spa and wellness coaching services. I’ve just realized how much writing I’ve been doing over the last few years! :)

As I’m compiling this list, I’m counting my blessings and I’m really grateful for my good health. With these special days and holidays as door openers, there are literally hundreds of ways we can all reach out to the people around us and celebrate life together.

Please visit Health Canada for active links to the websites of the health-related organizations. Also, if any of these organizations resonate strongly with you, consider volunteering, donating money, or participating in their events. As you can see, there are lots of needs to fill in this world, so help where you can (especially if you’re looking for your life’s purpose) to make the world a better place for all of us.

P.S. #1: As you read this list, you might find yourself saying, “There’s a day for that?” more than once. To answer your question, yes, yes, there is. Thank you to all of the creative and caring people out there who have worked so hard to make these dates official on local, national, and international calendars.

P.S. #2: I’d really love it if you’d share these blog posts via social media with your friends, family, co-workers, and clients. Thank you in advance.

P.S. #3: If you know of a special health- and wellness-related day, week, or month that I haven’t mentioned, please leave a comment and let us know about it and I’ll update the list.

P.S. #4: If you have a wellness blog like mine, here’s a editorial calendar with tons of ideas of what you can write about over the course of the year. You’re welcome!

Creating Wellness ebook now on Amazon.com

First a few words on the importance of being healthy.

As Count Tyrone Rugen said in The Princess Bride, “Get your rest. If you haven’t got your health, you haven’t got anything.”

Being healthy means having the freedom to do whatever you want with your life.

I believe many illnesses are largely preventable and it all comes down to a person’s ability to relax. I wrote Creating Wellness because I’ve observed that high levels of stress are lurking behind the scenes of many illnesses and managing stress is a big piece of the healthy lifestyle puzzle.

Having a chronic disease is not only challenging, but it keeps people from pursuing their dreams and achieving their goals. Poor health is often a huge, all-consuming distraction and results in people spending their time seeking medical attention, standing in line to fill prescriptions, dealing with side effects of medications, worrying about finances and/or the future, and trying to cope with pain, etc., instead of doing their own things that bring them joy.
The good news is, there’s still time to make small lifestyle changes NOW — like quitting smoking, exercising more, fueling your body with more nutritious food, getting regular massages, establishing healthy sleep habits, and speaking your truth — that will save you tremendous expense and suffering later. Maria Koropecky ~ Creating Wellness

Creating Wellness includes practical tips to help people relax and folding them into your life may prevent illnesses from showing up in the first place.

Here’s a tip on how to sleep better:

Also, make sure your bedroom is as dark as can be while you’re sleeping and you don’t have any bluish lights turned on (like the lights from your TV, computer, cell phone and even your alarm clock/radio) in the hours before you hit the pillow.
Blue lights can really interfere with the sleep cycle because historically, blue lights mean daylight in our brain, which means it’s time for us to be busy and productive, not resting. Maria Koropecky ~ Creating Wellness

Turn off blue lights to sleep better at night.

Turn off blue lights to sleep better at night.

Creating Wellness is also available on Amazon Canada.

This short ebook is a quick read, has lots of cheery photos, and contains some practical tips on how to relax and manage stress. If you want to be healthier and are committed to making some lifestyle changes, than reading Creating Wellness is a good start.

"Creating Wellness: 3 Massive Mistakes Foodies Make That Keep Them Unhealthy, Overweight, and Uncreative" ebook by Maria Alexandra Koropecky.

I’m super excited to announce that I’ve just published my “Creating Wellness” ebook!

“Creating Wellness” is the short title; the full title is actually, “Creating Wellness: 3 Massive Mistakes Foodies Make That Keep Them Unhealthy, Overweight, and Uncreative.”

My interest in health and wellness started in childhood. Unbeknownst to everyone else, I was always on some sort of health kick – like the time I used some sort of orange pully device that attached to a door handle and I’d move my arms and legs up and down and side to side every day  – thinking I was exercising – until I broke the darn thing with my rigorous routines and enthusiasm. :)

Every now and then I’d try to lose weight on my own but at the same time, I loved eating and wanted to be a famous chef when I grew up.

Fast forward 30 odd years.

After many twists and turns in life and not always making the best choices for my health, I’m back on the road to wellness and as the owner of Homespunspa Mobile spa, I’ve made it my life’s work to encourage people to make health and wellness a priority in their life.

I specifically wrote this ebook for foodies who want to be healthier AND tap into their creativity and I’ll tell you why:

“Don’t die with the music still in you.” ~ Wayne W. Dyer

The above quote makes me think of my father and I’ve dedicated this ebook to him. When I was in my late twenties, I gave my father a book to help him write his memoirs. The book was written and compiled by Patricia A. Williams and is called Once Upon a Lifetime and it invites you to “Take time to record the stories of your life” by answering 1001 questions. My father and I both shared a love of words and communication and he always said how much he wanted to write about his family and his life and I was hoping this book would get his creative juices flowing.

I think my father always had the intention of writing his books but somehow never got around to it. He had an illustrious career, a happy marriage, a knack for gardening and fishing, and a full life and then, suddenly, at 61, he became ill. He visited his doctor and the doctor said he had to check himself into the hospital that day. I didn’t know this until later, but he brought the Once upon a Lifetime book with him to pass the time in the hospital. Inside the book, he wrote, “For my daughter Maria” and that was that. That’s all he wrote in that book. He died 10 days later. His books were never written.

I don’t want this to happen to you or anyone else. I don’t want you to “die with the music still in you” and that’s why I’ve combined all of my work experience, education, talents, skills, and interests, and my entire heart and soul, to write this ebook, “Creating Wellness: 3 Massive Mistakes Foodies Make that Keep Them Unhealthy, Overweight, And Uncreative.”

If you have something you’d like to do in your life, a song in your heart that you want to sing out loud, whether it’s write a book, or fall in love, or travel to a distant land, or operate a food truck, whatever it is, I’d like to help you live your dreams. I’d like to help you get your dreams out of your head and into your life.

The solution starts with reading my ebook, “Creating Wellness: 3 Massive Mistakes Foodies Make that Keep Them Unhealthy, Overweight, And Uncreative.”

Foodies are my people

I’ve written this ebook especially for foodies because:

1.    I come from a long line of foodies and good cooks and all of my family’s celebrations have revolved around food. We enjoy talking about food, trying new foods, going to restaurants, watching cooking shows on TV, and sharing meals at dinner parties.

2.    I’m also a pretty good cook myself and I love how cooking lets me be creative.

3.    I’ve also written a cookbook of sorts called, How to Throw a Home Spa Pajama Party the Homespunspa Way that is chalk full of recipes for homemade spa treatments that I’ve developed myself.

4.    Also, I’ve worked as a breakfast cook, a deli clerk, a banquet server, and waitress, and I know how stressful the food and hospitality industries can be. Working in a professional kitchen with all of the hot stoves, cold freezers, sharp knives, late hours, odd ingredients, and demanding bosses, co-workers, and customers, in a small space with lots of noisy activity, can be very stressful and hard on the system. I’ve noticed many professional foodies turn to food, alcohol, cigarettes, drugs, gambling, etc., for relief because they are having trouble coping in their high stress environments.

5.    Also, I’m an emotional eater and have been struggling with my weight most of my life.

6.    Also, I know that many foodies have dreams of writing their own cookbooks, and/or winning competitions, and/or opening their own restaurants some day.

7.    And as a foodie myself, I can relate.

I hope this ebook, “Creating Wellness: 3 Massive Mistakes Foodies Make that Keep Them Unhealthy, Overweight, And Uncreative,” will give you some insight and will help you climb the ladder of success to new heights!

By the end of this ebook, you’ll know the three best ways to relax, feel better, and heal your life so you can ultimately live the life of your dreams.

  1. You’ll learn the “S-Word” that is killing your health and how to remedy this immediately;
  2. You’ll learn the secret yet powerful habit that all successful foodies practice; and
  3. You’ll learn the most advantageous investment you can ever make that will pay off big time for the rest of your life.

I’m really excited about my ebook! I hope it makes a positive difference in your life.

I’d like to leave you with one quote by Anne Lamott – maybe it resonates with you, too.

“Oh my God, what if you wake up some day, and you’re 65, or 75, and you never got your memoir or novel written; or you didn’t go swimming in warm pools and oceans all those years because your thighs were jiggly and you had a nice big comfortable tummy; or you were just so strung out on perfectionism and people-pleasing that you forgot to have a big juicy creative life, of imagination and radical silliness and staring off into space like when you were a kid? It’s going to break your heart. Don’t let this happen. Repent just means to change direction — and NOT to be said by someone who is waggling their forefinger at you. Repentance is a blessing. Pick a new direction, one you wouldn’t mind ending up at, and aim for that. Shoot the moon.” ~ Anne Lamott

I’m about to live a dream I’ve had for most of my life.

Let me take you back to the mid-80’s when I was 15 or 16 years old. One summer, I went to a tennis camp in upstate New York and one of the girls I met there, Raisa, was from Chicago and she told me that she once saw this woman called, “Oprah Winfrey,” in the airport and that was the most famous person she had ever seen. I hadn’t heard of Oprah at that point but for some reason I made a mental note. Raisa said, “keep an eye out for her because some day she’ll be a household name.”

Wow, did she ever call that one!

A few months later, Oprah’s talk show went national and my mom and I watched her show at 4pm in the afternoons. The Oprah Show, among other talk shows of the era, inspired me and my friends to pretend we had our own talk show and we would interview each other and sing songs and laugh at our own goofiness. I think we also recorded our shenanigans on the technological marvel of the time, VHS!

I didn’t mention Oprah because I’m about to meet her – that’s not the dream I’m talking about – though fingers crossed, maybe I’ll meet her some day :) .

I mentioned Oprah because to me, she’s a great communicator and she has been one of the touchstones of my life. Someday, I’d like to thank her in person for paving the way for people like me and for showing the world how important good communication is in the grand scheme of things.

Back to my story. Also while I was in high school, I went on a weekend retreat. At some point, everybody had to go to the front of the room and speak to the group and share their story. That was a turning point moment for me because when I stood at the podium and spoke to everyone and made them laugh, I discovered that I actually like public speaking!

I think my dream of being a professional speaker was born in my teens but as my life continued, the dream somehow never got off the ground in spite of my many attempts.

Fast forward a few years to the early ‘90’s – this was before the Internet! I was in University studying English. One weekend, I dragged my friends to a Psychic Fair and I sat down with a man called, “Ravenhawk.” He told me that he saw me having my own radio show one day. Before he could finish his thought, I interrupted him, which ticks me off to this day, but those words have always stuck with me.

The following year, I took a speech course at University and it was by far my favourite class of my entire degree.

A few years later, I almost went to Broadcasting school, which I should have done in hindsight, but that didn’t work out.

I’ve also been a member of Toastmasters and may return soon.

So that’s basically my history with public speaking. I like to joke that I’m taking the extended milk run toward my dream.

I think Ravenhawk said the radio show won’t happen till my early 40’s and I wish he had said something like “have patience” and “don’t try to force it” because the timing won’t be right sooner.

Well, I’ve just turned 45 and things are coming together for me. The pieces of the puzzle are taking shape.

Suddenly my dream of speaking to an audience is within reach because a few months ago, out of the blue, I got an email with the subject line, “Speak up, the World is Listening!”

Those words struck me like a lightening bolt.

And now I’m ready to make my announcement.

This is brand new information and you are among the first to know.

I have a new radio show called, “Supernatural Spa” on VoiceAmerica starting in the autumn! I’m so excited, I can hardly contain myself!

I’m going to be talking about how spas are designed to stimulate the senses and elicit the relaxation response. I’m going to interview all kinds of holistic practitioners for tips on how to manage stress and lead a healthier life.

But wait, there’s more…

To get the ball rolling for my show and to introduce myself to more people, my executive producer and I have come up with a really fun and unique idea! I’ve combined my education and all of my life experience, work experience, talents, skills and interests and my entire heart and soul to create a Stress Relief VIP Spa Day!

You're invited to a stress relief VIP spa day.

The Stress Relief VIP Spa Day is a full day, intensive, one-to-one spa appointment and as the owner of Homespunspa Mobile Spa, I’ll bring the spa experience to you in five different sessions over the course of one day.

Nothing Beats Beets!

Many years ago, I invited a guy over to my apartment for dinner and asked him if there was any food he didn’t like. He said, “I don’t know…beets?” I said, “OK, I won’t serve beets,” (not that I would have anyway that night) but now that I’m reminiscing about my younger years, I can’t help but think this guy is missing out on a really yummy root vegetable. And because I love it so much, I’m going to expand on my earlier post, “Nothing beats borscht” and talk about beets again! In my opinion, nothing beats beets!

Right now, I’m writing a book called “Supernatural Spa Ingredients” and here’s what I know about beets:

BEETS & BEET ROOT POWDER (Beta vulgaris): Beets are highly nutritious and detoxifying. Beet juice can be rinsed through hair to achieve brilliant red results and beet powder makes soap turn rosy.

Home spa recipes: hair colour rinses, soaps, lip balms, blush, eyeshadow.

Role in cosmetic formulation: antioxidant, binding, cosmetic colourant, hair conditioning, hair dying, skin conditioning, skin protecting.

Hair: Infuse into a hair rinse as a colouring agent.

Soap: Add to soap recipes.

Make-up: Add to lip balms and makeup for colour.

Food: Blend in a smoothie for iron and antioxidants. Eat for nutrition.

Balances: Vata dosha, Infinity/Air Elemental Natures, Root Chakra.

Region: North America, Central America, Europe, North Africa.

Find: Grocery store, health food store, garden.

Caution: May stain.

And here’s a home spa recipe for Rosy Guest Soaps that I’ve taken from my first book, “How to Throw a Home Spa Pajama Party the Homespunspa Way.”

Rosy Guest Soaps

I like to use plastic molds in the shape of sheep for these little beauties but you can use whatever you have on hand and your soap will turn out just as sweet.

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup glycerin (melt & pour) – A by-product of soap-making which is used as a soap base foundation in quick, easy, and re-batched soap recipes.
  • 1/4 cup cocoa butter – Used in skincare for its moisturizing and cleansing properties.
  • 1/4 cup beeswax – Can be used in many applications around the spa but is most often used for its comforting scent and to thicken cosmetics.
  • 1 TB evening primrose oil – Use externally to help skin.
  • 1/2 tsp vitamin E – Prevents scar tissue and may reduce anxiety. Also acts as a preservative.
  • 1/4 tsp beet root powder – Highly nutritious and detoxifying and makes soap turn rosy.
  • 10 drops rosewood essential oil – Calming, head-clearing and relaxing. Often included in romance-eliciting fragrances.

Method: In a double boiler, (I use a metal bowl resting on a pot with one inch of water on the stovetop), gently and slowly melt the “melt & pour” soap base, cocoa butter, and beeswax over low heat and add the evening primrose oil. Keep the pot covered to conserve moisture and try not to stir the ingredients too much because that will add bubbles to your finished product. Once the solid ingredients have turned to liquid, remove from heat and take out a spoonful of the soap and pour it in a Pyrex container. To the spoonful of soap, add the vitamin E and beet powder and mix until well blended. The powder will want to clump, so gently break it up. Pour the rosy liquid back into the rest of the soap and whisk in. By now the liquid soap should be cool enough for the essential oils, so add 10 drops of rosewood essential oil at this time. Mix gently. Have your molds lined up on your counter. You can find plastic molds at craft and candy-making stores in all kinds of shapes and dimensions. I like to use sheep and/or hearts about the size of a box of matches. Pour the liquid soap into the molds. The cocoa butter may separate out a bit but that just creates a pleasant double-decker, marbled effect. Once the soap has hardened, unmold the shapes.

Manner: Wash your hands with the soap and rinse.

Storage / Shelf Life: Unless you plan to use the soap right away, wrap the soaps in plastic to keep the moisture in. Will keep for at least 6 months.

As you can see, beets are lovely and can be added to any spa, wellness and nutrition program. If you’d like to learn more home spa recipes or keep up to date on the progress of my book or to find out about upcoming, “Make Your Own Cosmetics Workshops,” please sign up for my mailing list at the top right corner of this blog to keep in touch. Thanks.

Can I Offer You A Hot Beverage?

Sheldon: Did you offer him a hot beverage?

Leonard: No.

Sheldon: Leonard, social protocol states when a friend is upset, you offer them a hot beverage, such as tea.

Howard: Tea does sound nice.

Sheldon: You heard the man, Leonard. And while you’re at it, I’m upset that we have an unannounced houseguest, so make me cocoa.

Sheldon has been known to say, “Did you offer him a hot beverage?” on the award-winning tv show, Big Bang Theory and yesterday, I was offered a complimentary warm apple cider drink while I was standing in line at the bank on a rainy, Friday afternoon. Autumn arrived right on time this year — to the day — which is rare — and the hot beverage hit the spot. I was reminded of a beverage I was drinking this past winter during my wellness tour in Ontario — a splash of apple cider vinegar with hot water — and I thought this would be a great time to share the recipe with you — especially since apples are in season right now.

All you need to do is put the kettle on, find a mug, pour a splash (up to a tablespoon) of apple cider vinegar into the mug and top it up with near-boiling water. That’s it. Take a sip and enjoy.

It tastes like you’re drinking warm salad dressing (sounds appetizing, I know :)   ) and the people around you will wonder what you’ve concocted just by the potent aroma in the air, but I really like it.

And if you want to kick your apple cider vinegar drink up a notch, stir in some extra antioxidants and flavour with a cinnamon stick as featured in this photo.

Can I offer you a hot beverage?

Can I offer you a hot beverage?

The Health Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar is one of my favourite home spa ingredients because it has so many healing properties and applications.

In my How to Throw a Home Spa Pajama Party the Homespunspa Way book, I write:

APPLE CIDER VINEGAR: Astringent vinegar restores the natural pH balance of skin and hair.

Home spa recipes: cleansers, toners, refiners, shampoos, conditioners, creams.

Role in cosmetic formulation: skin conditioning, binding, emulsion stabilizing, viscosity controlling.

Face: Add to facials to cleanse pores, clear oiliness, exfoliate.

Skin Types: Use especially on NORMAL, OILY, DRY or MATURE skin.

Baths & Body: Add to bathwater to balance skin.

Hair: Apply as a hair rinse to control dandruff, balance pH, cleanse and condition hair.

Feet: Use on feet to cure athlete’s foot.

Food: Eat for nutrition and to help alkalanize body.

Caution: 1) Conduct skin patch test first.

And according to my research online, drinking apple cider vinegar will help you improve your complexion, cool sunburn, reduce swelling, lose excess body weight, detoxify, calm upset stomach, cure hiccups, clear a stuffy nose, soothe a sore throat, beat fatigue, whiten teeth, remove warts, and minimize night time leg cramps — which will lead to a better night’s sleep. I also learned that many bloggers refer to apple cider vinegar as simply “ACV.”

So the next time a friend comes over to your home upset, out of sorts, and/or in distress, remember to offer them a hot beverage like hot apple cider vinegar and mention this blog post and Sheldon.

Here’s to our health and wellness! Cheers.

Spa Life Magazine, Home Is Where The Spa Is

As many of you know, earlier this year, I went to Toronto, Ontario on a Wellness Tour and one of the highlights, definitely, was when I was approached, out of the blue, by Lauren Nesbitt-Baggerman for an interview in Spa Life Magazine.

Of course, I said “Yes, I’d love to be featured in your magazine.” What a lovely, unexpected opportunity.

Lauren was working on an article for their upcoming Romance edition and wanted to introduce her readers to the beauty of mobile spas.  She specifically wanted to know, “What is the benefit of at home spa treatments and how does Homespunspa deliver spa treatments for couples.”

At that time, Valentine’s Day was just around the corner and it was easy for me to answer her questions. If you’d like to know my answers, please click on the accompanying image — I’m first up in the article. Alternatively, you can download a pdf copy of the article, “Home is where the spa is, mobile spas come to you,” at  SpaLife-Romance2013-HomeisWheretheSpaIs.

I love doing interviews. I love connecting with people and sharing information and having great conversations. If you’d like to arrange an interview with me like Lauren did about mobile spas, esthetics and/or wellness for your magazine, book, blog, radio show, tv show, youtube video and the like, please send me an email and I’d be happy to chat.

Spa Life Magazine is published by Harworth Publishing in Guelph Ontario. Thank you, Lauren, for the great article.
