Dear Friends, Customers, and Clients:

I hope this blog post finds you well. I’m writing to let you know about what’s going on at Homespunspa Mobile Spa these days.

1)    Spa Parties

Since 2011, we’ve done many, many dozens of spa parties in all kinds of beautiful homes, hotels, schools, and offices in the Greater Victoria area, including Sooke, Sidney, and Lake Cowichan, and have met all kinds of wonderful people along the way.

So, if you’d like to host a spa party this autumn, just plump up those throw pillows and invite your friends over for some spa time, and we’ll do the rest!

Please visit Homespunspa.com for more info and email me at Homespunspa@shaw.ca to book your preferred date!

2)    Mobile Spa Services

Our spa services are designed to help people relax and manage stress and if one to one appointments are more your speed, we also offer facials, manicures, pedicures, relaxation massages, and chair massages for individuals. Having a spa service at home saves you time and money and you don’t have to worry about driving through traffic, finding a parking spot, or hiring a babysitter.

Please visit Homespunspa.com for more info and email me at Homespunspa@shaw.ca to book your spa appointment! Gift certificates are always available.

3)    Crystal Clear Coaching

Through thoughtful questions and active listening, a coach can offer support in areas such as health, lifestyle, life purpose, relationships, business, career, and spirituality, etc., and can help their clients produce extraordinary, fulfilling, and sustainable results.

If you’re considering the idea of working with a coach, I’d love to offer you a free Crystal Mapping Session. Using the wisdom of crystals, Crystal Mapping is a fun and interactive way to chart your own course in life. You’ll get a taste of what my style of coaching is like and from there, you can decide if you’d like to sign up for a series of coaching sessions with me as well.

Please visit MariaKoropecky.com for more info and email me at talktoacoach@gmail.com to schedule your free Crystal Mapping session!

4)    Stem Cell Nutrition

Supporting our own Stem Cell system is the key to good health and in my travels, I’ve found a new and unique aquatic-botanical product that supports our own release of bone-marrow stem cells. It’s a health supplement made from blue-green algae that comes from Klamath Lake, Oregon.

So, if you’d like to hear more about stem cell nutrition, to boost your health, to support your body’s own repair system, and get your hands on these supplements made by a company called, Cerule, please contact me, Maria, by email: talktoacoach@gmail.com.

You’re also welcome to visit my Cerule page: http://wellnessmaria.cerule.com/.

5)    Cruising into Wellness online store

As you can see, I’m passionate about wellness and I love helping people be proactive about their health. To further support my mobile spa clients and coaching clients with their health and wellness, I’ve opened an online store called Cruising into Wellness.

Happy Garlic Day!

When you think of a spa, you probably don’t think about garlic at the same time, but did you know that garlic is actually a supernatural spa ingredient?

In honour of National Garlic Day on April 19th, here’s a quick snapshot about how garlic is used in cosmetics and how it can be used in the home spa.

GARLIC (Allium sativum):

  • Home spa recipes: extracts, baths, lotions. Garlic among the roses.
  • Role in cosmetic formulation: skin conditioning, masking.
  • Baths: Add whole cloves with their peel to bathwater for antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties, and to treat ACNE scars.
  • Body: Add extract to a lotion to rub Rheumatic pain and to disinfect insect bites.
  • Feet: Apply to feet to heal corns and bunyans.
  • Food: Eat for flavour and nutrition and to help with colds, flu, asthma, bronchitis, fatigue, digestive problems, high blood pressure, vericose veins, Rheumatism, and to support healthy cholesterol levels.
  • Balances: Root (1st) and Third Eye (6th) chakras plus reduces Vata (Infinity/Air), Increases Pitta (Fire), Reduces Kapha (Water/Earth).
  • Find in: Healthfood stores, grocery stores, markets, wellness centres, pharmacies, cosmetics, food products, medications/supplements, gardens.
  • Caution: Garlic’s odour may be overpowering to the people around you.

Here’s a quote that talks about the aromatherapy side of garlic:

“I could smell garlic, butter, and wine – the world’s most delicious flavor combination. It made me feel warm, like the first few sips of wine always do,”
~ Sarah Jio, The Violets of March

So as you can see, even though it’s known as the “smelly rose,” garlic is still loved by millions around the world and has been regarded as both a food and a remedy since ancient times.

Best Crystal for Transformation: Lapis Lazuli

In my short story ebook, The Call of the Lapis Lazuli, I tell the story of the moment before I was even born, when I first met with my mystical mentor, my Guardian Angel, Caliel, to inspire my readers to consider their own life’s purpose, potential, and calling, and if you’re interested, you can find my ebook on Amazon.

Here’s the inspiration for the story, my own lapis lazuli stone. Isn’t it beautiful? I love the colour of the golden pyrite flecks against the royal blue canvas. It’s like stars in the night sky.

Lapis Lazuli

I love gemstones because they embody many wonderful metaphysical properties and I keep them close at hand to remind me to focus on the qualities I want to embrace in my life. The Lapis Lazuli holds great significance for me because it’s all about communication, creativity, and self-expression. For me, the lapis lazuli also emits an energy of transformation because change can’t happen until you start speaking your truth.

This video is the first of a series where I’ll be talking about my fascination with crystals and gemstones and sharing the jewells of my collection.

Video: the Call of the Lapis Lazuli with extra photos

Here’s the transcript from the video:

Hi, my name is Maria Koropecky and I’m a coach, healer, and author and the owner of Homespunspa Mobile Spa. Today I’d like to talk about the hero’s journey.

Have you ever read a book or watched a movie or heard a story that was so riveting and exciting that you couldn’t wait to find out what happens next? Well, it was probably about someone on a hero’s or heroine’s journey.

These stories are timeless and they appeal to people across cultures and generations and they have certain things in common like a call to adventure and meeting with a mentor and encountering other supernatural characters. Then the hero goes through a series of trials and then there’s a big showdown and then the hero wins and then goes back home to the ordinary world to share the treasure with others.

Stories like Star Wars, The Odyssey, and the Alchemist…

There’s something about these stories that resonate deeply within us because hero’s journeys are not just for characters in epic novels. We’re all on our own journey of self-discovery and adventure. We’re all heros and heroines in our own lives.

Unfortunately, sometimes life gets in the way, and we get distracted, and we procrastinate, and we put those dreams on hold indefintely.

Well, today’s the today for you to take those dreams and yourself off the shelf.

As a coach, healer, and author, I help sensitive and creative introverts – people who like to spend time alone – but who are also hearing a call to service or adventure – work through reluctance and resitance, so they feel empowered to move further along their hero’s journey and ultimately transform their lives, fullfill their mission, and share the elixir they’ve found with the rest of the world.

I can relate because I’m an introvert, too.

Perhaps you’re at a place in life where:

  1. You’re in transition and are thinking about the next chapter in your life; or
  2. You feel like adventure is calling or like you’re being called to service or you just feel like you need to get yourself out there in the world and you’re tired of settling for mediocre but don’t know your next steps; or
  3. You’re looking for a transformational experience that will catapult you on to your hero’s or heroine’s journey.

I want you to get out of the audience and into the play and get off the sidelines and get in the game and feel what it’s like to be authentically alive, while still maintaining the best of what it means to be an introvert. The world needs introverts and here’s your chance to expand your reach.

I want you to be excited about what happens next in your life and coaching is the ticket to getting your whole life to change.

Every hero needs a coach. Just look at Luke Skywalker and Yoda!

In my short story ebook, “The Call of the Lapis Lazuli,” I tell the story of my own journey when I first met with my mystical mentor, my Guardian Angel, before I was born, to inspire my readers to consider their own life’s purpose and potential and calling, and if you’re interested, you can find my ebook on Amazon.

Mt. Baker

The photo above that I took of Mt. Baker is the cover and here’s the inspiration for the story, [see top photo] my lapis lazuli. Isn’t it wonderful?

The Lapis Lazuli holds great significance for me because it’s all about communication, creativity, and self-expression and this video is the first of a series where I’ll be talking about my fascination with crystals and gemstones and sharing the jewells of my collection.

If you want my help to transform your life and experience the hero’s journey first hand, please contact me, Maria, and we’ll set up a time to chat. It would be my joy to walk beside you on your journey.

To get the ball rolling, sign up for a free, 30-minute “Transform your life” coaching consultation apppointment with me.

and we’ll work together to…

* Create a crystal clear vision for your ultimate life so you know exactly what you want, where you’re headed, and what you need to do to make it happen.

* Uncover hidden challenges that may be slowing down your progress in your ability to make positive changes that last.

* And you’ll leave our coaching sessions feeling renewed, re-energized, and inspired to finally achieve the transformation you seek, once and for all.

Transformation is possible.

Please contact me and book your “Transform Your Life” session and let’s get you on that hero’s journey! You can find me at homespunspa.com. I’m looking forward to meeting you!

Here’s a calendar of Wellness and Health Awareness Days, Weeks, and Months for Canadians in 2016. Hopefully, these health promotion days will inspire you to practice self-care throughout the seasons. (For a deeper look at why self-care is so important, please read my blog post “Is Self-Care Selfish?”

On occasion, I’ve also included links to blog posts I’ve written about practicing on-going self-care that tie into these events and to my Homespunspa Mobile Spa and wellness coaching services. I’ve just realized how much writing I’ve been doing over the last few years! :)

As I’m compiling this list, I’m counting my blessings and I’m really grateful for my good health. With these special days and holidays as door openers, there are literally hundreds of ways we can all reach out to the people around us and celebrate life together.

Please visit Health Canada for active links to the websites of the health-related organizations. Also, if any of these organizations resonate strongly with you, consider volunteering, donating money, or participating in their events. As you can see, there are lots of needs to fill in this world, so help where you can (especially if you’re looking for your life’s purpose) to make the world a better place for all of us.

P.S. #1: As you read this list, you might find yourself saying, “There’s a day for that?” more than once. To answer your question, yes, yes, there is. Thank you to all of the creative and caring people out there who have worked so hard to make these dates official on local, national, and international calendars.

P.S. #2: I’d really love it if you’d share these blog posts via social media with your friends, family, co-workers, and clients. Thank you in advance.

P.S. #3: If you know of a special health- and wellness-related day, week, or month that I haven’t mentioned, please leave a comment and let us know about it and I’ll update the list.

P.S. #4: If you have a wellness blog like mine, here’s a editorial calendar with tons of ideas of what you can write about over the course of the year. You’re welcome!

Sharing a Tip From My Creating Wellness Ebook on How to Sleep Better

I’m so excited to announce that my Creating Wellness ebook is now available on Amazon.com and I’d like to share a tip on how to sleep better to give you a taste of what’s inside.

Creating Wellness ebook now on Amazon.com

First a few words on the importance of being healthy.

As Count Tyrone Rugen said in The Princess Bride, “Get your rest. If you haven’t got your health, you haven’t got anything.”

Being healthy means having the freedom to do whatever you want with your life.

I believe many illnesses are largely preventable and it all comes down to a person’s ability to relax. I wrote Creating Wellness because I’ve observed that high levels of stress are lurking behind the scenes of many illnesses and managing stress is a big piece of the healthy lifestyle puzzle.

Having a chronic disease is not only challenging, but it keeps people from pursuing their dreams and achieving their goals. Poor health is often a huge, all-consuming distraction and results in people spending their time seeking medical attention, standing in line to fill prescriptions, dealing with side effects of medications, worrying about finances and/or the future, and trying to cope with pain, etc., instead of doing their own things that bring them joy.
The good news is, there’s still time to make small lifestyle changes NOW — like quitting smoking, exercising more, fueling your body with more nutritious food, getting regular massages, establishing healthy sleep habits, and speaking your truth — that will save you tremendous expense and suffering later. Maria Koropecky ~ Creating Wellness

Creating Wellness includes practical tips to help people relax and folding them into your life may prevent illnesses from showing up in the first place.

Here’s a tip on how to sleep better:

Also, make sure your bedroom is as dark as can be while you’re sleeping and you don’t have any bluish lights turned on (like the lights from your TV, computer, cell phone and even your alarm clock/radio) in the hours before you hit the pillow.
Blue lights can really interfere with the sleep cycle because historically, blue lights mean daylight in our brain, which means it’s time for us to be busy and productive, not resting. Maria Koropecky ~ Creating Wellness

Turn off blue lights to sleep better at night.

Turn off blue lights to sleep better at night.

Creating Wellness is also available on Amazon Canada.

This short ebook is a quick read, has lots of cheery photos, and contains some practical tips on how to relax and manage stress. If you want to be healthier and are committed to making some lifestyle changes, than reading Creating Wellness is a good start.

How I found out about the Rayner Institute

by Maria Koropecky, Wellness Coach

Secretly, I’ve wanted to be a life coach for at least a decade but it didn’t seem like it was possible for me. I would not have known where to go to get coaching training even if I had given the thought any serious consideration.

I hired a business coach back in 2005 and I loved our conversations about the spiritual laws of the universe but this particular coach made things more about her than they were about me and after a few months, she pushed me away and that was that. We’ve not spoken since and that experience left a bad taste in my mouth about coaches in general.

Meanwhile, a lot has changed in the coaching profession especially in the past few years and coaches are being recognized for doing some wonderful work for the people of this planet.

I wish I had had the sense to become a coach sooner but the timing wasn’t right for me. I still had a lot of living to do first before I could embark on this career. Like for example, I had to go to esthetics school five years ago so I could awaken my healing and nurturing side and learn how to work with people hands on.

Had I just jumped ahead and gone to coaching school at that time instead, (which would have worked for other people), I personally would have been missing some key ingredients for my recipe and my coaching practice would not have flourished. I also would not have opened my mobile spa.

Anyway, fast forward to the summer of 2014. It was a challenging summer for me personally. My finances were not in good shape and on top of that, my Uncle who was also my Godfather died and then my friend from high school had committed suicide. In the bigger picture, you may also recall that in August of that year, Robin Williams committed suicide and Joan Rivers died as well. The world had taken on a serious tone.

Meanwhile, I got a call from a woman who was looking to hire someone to come and give her 90-year-old mother a manicure. So, I went to the seniors’ care home and that was the day I met Carol and her husband, Peter, and June, Carol’s mother. I had no idea how pivotal that day, where I was just going about my business, was for me.

The manicure appointment went well enough that they called me again for another appointment and I started visiting June every five weeks or so.

In November, Carol mentioned something to her mother about going away for a week to upgrade her coaching training and my ear’s perked up.

“Did you say coaching?”

As it turned out, Carol is a coach and a facilitator at the Rayner Institute and she said there was a course starting in February, if I was interested. So I took her card and thought about it long and hard.

Eventually, in April of 2015, I took the plunge and enrolled in the Self-Actualized Coaching and Mentoring Program at the Rayner Institute and I have since passed my exams and graduated.

Currently, I’m going through the program again but this time as a Ride-Along where I get to hold a healing space for the new students and support them on their journey as they enter the coaching profession and become certified coaches themselves.

And last night during class, I had my own personal insight that made a big difference in how I see my life. Mark Rayner, the founder of the Rayner Institute, was coaching Carol to show the students the beauty of a transformational and transcendent coaching conversation.

(Normally, I wouldn’t share what goes on in a confidential coaching class but I will have asked for permission from Carol and Mark before publishing this post).

Carol spoke about her mother. She wanted to enjoy the time she spends with her even if it’s just flipping through a catalogue together. She said that 18 months ago, her mother became very ill and she was in hospital in Calgary for a month, and they didn’t give her much time to live. Somehow during that difficult time, they sold her mother’s house and moved her to Victoria.

As I listened to Carol describe the process of moving her mother to the Island where she would be closer to the whole family including her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, I marvelled at how those events and decisions also affected me, someone they didn’t even know existed yet. It struck me that an act as personal as caring for an elderly parent could also have so much influence over other people’s lives, known and unknown, as well.

To me, if June hadn’t moved to Victoria and if Carol hadn’t gone looking for a manicurist for her mother and if Carol hadn’t mentioned coaching, then I would not have found the Rayner Institute and I would have probably postponed my dream of becoming a life coach indefinitely.

Suddenly, the timing was right. A lot of things had to happen behind the scenes in order for me to get to this place in my life and my point is, you can’t write this stuff, you can’t script it, and you can’t force it. You just have to follow your heart wherever it wants to go.

Also, and this was my insight last night, you have no idea whose lives you touch even if you never, ever meet them directly.

That’s the beauty of coaching. You get to touch the lives of people and help them get to where they want to go just by being you and doing what you do. And in turn, the people who are getting coached are also spreading love and kindness and healing energy to the people in their lives and day by day, the world becomes a better place for all of us.

I’m truly grateful for June and Carol for leading me here and for my extraordinary coaching training at the Rayner Institute and now I can pay it forward as a coach and as myself to my friends and clients.

If you’re thinking about becoming a coach, I’d be happy to talk to you about the Rayner Institute. Also, if you’re thinking about hiring a coach, then, feel free to call me to make an appointment.

We’re all connected and don’t think that what you’re doing isn’t affecting someone else’s life. The ripples in a pond are endless.

We have a new member on our team at Homespunspa Mobile Spa! Let me introduce you to Anna Pretto, a professional Airbrush Spray Tan Artist who is certified in Spray Tanning, Lash Extensions, and Hair Threading.

Anna will be offering spray tanning as part of our new Saturna Island Spa Party Package. Because you may have some questions about spray tanning, I thought it would be a nice idea to interview Anna to find out more about this fun spa service.

Hi Anna, I’m so excited that you have joined the Homespunspa Mobile Spa team and you will be giving spray tans as part of our new Saturna Island spa party package. Welcome!

I’d like to ask you some questions on behalf of our customers to introduce you to everyone and to show how spray tanning works.

1. What’s your favourite part of being a airbrush spray tan artist?

Seeing the immediate, great results that clients receive from a spray tan.

Spray Tan Artist, Anna

2. What lead you to become a professional airbrush spray tan artist?

Because of my love of all things esthetics, I wanted to add another service to my menu. I chose spray tanning because it is a healthy and safe alternative to traditional tanning methods and I feel proud that I can offer that to my clients.

3. Do you have any memories of tanning when you were growing up?

Yes! Being of Greek descent, every year that summer would come around I remember from even when I was a child that my olive skin would radiate when I started to tan.

4. What is a spray tan?

Sunless spray tanning is the spray/mist application of sunless tanning solution to desired areas of your body. When applied, DHA (the active ingredient in sunless tanning solution) reacts with the proteins in the skin’s superficial layer to form a golden brown colour. Your skin begins to darken 2 to 3 hours after application and reaches its peak colour within 24 hours. The colour will gradually fade through natural exfoliation, just like a tan from the sun.

5. What are the benefits of getting a spray tan?

There are lots of benefits with getting a spray tan:
An even, streak-free tan — the fine mist allows an even application all over, with no patchiness, and without going orange;
• Improved appearance — a spray tan helps you to look good year round, look thinner and healthier instantly, and it boosts self confidence;
• Even skin tone — A spray tan evens out skin tone and hides blemishes and imperfections, including stretch marks and varicose veins;
• Fast application — It’s fast: in just 15 minutes you can go from being pale and white to having a deep bronzed tan.

6. Is spray tanning safe?

Yes! DHA is non-toxic and non-carcinogenic. It’s made from sugar and is also used in the food industry. Spray tanning with DHA as the active tanning agent is approved and recommended by all the major medical associations and skin cancer associations around the world.

7. What spray tan product do you use and why did you choose this brand?

I use Aviva Natural Spray Tanning Solutions which is organic and is even used by celebrities. Here are the following reasons why we use only the safest of solutions:
1. Doctor formulated.
2. Natural-looking and long lasting.
3. Even-fading.
4. Oil-free.
5. Fragrance-free.
6. Alcohol-free.
7. Erythrulose-free.
8. Only made with FDA approved Ingredients.
9. All natural.
10. Composed of the highest quality, premium grade DHA.
11. Water-based.
12. Fast-drying.
13. Vegan.
14. Not tested on Animals.
15. Free of harsh dyes and chemicals.
16. Nut-free and allergen-free.
17. Non-comedogenic
18. Hypoallergenic.

8. That’s quite a list! Does the spray tanning solution give off an odour?

Aviva spray tan solution doesn’t give off any odour at all.

9. Can you customize the tints? Can I (the guest) choose how tanned I want to be?

Yes, I’ll evaluate your skin type to help you achieve your best sunless colour possible and I’ll consult with you to find what kind of colour you are looking to achieve.

10. Do the spa party guests have to remove all of their clothes to get their spray tan and how do you maintain privacy?

You can wear a swimsuit, undergarments or no clothes at all, whatever you’re comfortable with!

Also, here’s a photo of the spray tent –>. To maintain privacy and for those guests who are feeling modest, the tent can be placed in a more private area of the spa party venue.

11. Can the spray tan stain furniture and if so, is there anything you do to prevent that?

The spray tent keeps the spray inside the tent. For whatever reason, should there be any overspray on furniture, for example, it’s easily washed off with a wet cloth as it’s all organic. For the spa parties, we have some cloths on hand and would just clean things up right away.

12. How much space is required for you to set up your spray tanning tent?

Luckily, spray tanning doesn’t require much space at all! My mobile spray tanning tent can be set up virtually anywhere while protecting anything outside of it from spray.

13. What’s the difference between Air Brush Tanning and Spray Booths?

Booth – whatever your body size or height, a spray booth will spray you with the exact same motion and amount of spray.

Airbrush – The amount of spray can be adjusted and tailored to your body type and for your needs.
• Airbrush tanning is much more accurate than booth sprays;
• Airbrushing can be done in the comfort of your home;
• What a booth does in 30-60 seconds, airbrushing takes between 10-15 minutes;
• Airbrush tanning allows for a precise application of the solution evenly across your body, ensuring the best results;
• Airbrush tanning is also cleaner than booth sprays;
• Airbrushing tends to last longer;
• Barrier creams are not necessary;
• No head caps or booties are needed.

14. Is there anything the spa party guests have to do before getting their spray tan?

• Wax or shave 24 hours before your spray tan as this will allow the pores to close before your tan;
• Do not apply deodorants, moisturizers or perfumes the day of your appointment or spa party as these can prevent proper absorption of the tanning solution.
• Exfoliate 24 hours before to remove any dead skin cells.

15. What if the spa party guests don’t have a chance to exfoliate their skin before the spa party?

If by chance the skin hasn’t been exfoliated 24 hours prior to the tan, we have the option to exfoliate at the time of the tan at the spa party; however, I cannot guarantee that the results would be as good, as the skin hasn’t had a chance to recover.

Yes, we have an exfoliation treatment option and make-up removal option built into the spa party theme (instead of getting the chair massage) in case someone needs to take those steps before getting their spray tan at the spa party.

16. Are there any contraindications (like eczema or some sort of skin rash, burn, scar or health condition) that will prevent you from applying the spray tan to someone?

No. In an organic spray tan such as this one, wrinkles, dry skin, irritation, rashes and other skin problems are diminished. The spray binds the moisture in the skin and repairs skin cells that have been damaged by harsh sun rays. It eliminates the formation of dried-out skin which normally occurs after traditional spray tanning.

17. How long will the spray tan last?

Your body is always shedding dead skin cells. This is why even a natural sun tans fade over a few days. Spray tanning affects only the outer skin layer, so just like a natural sun tan the spray tan fades as your skin cells are shed. Your spray tan will usually last between 5 to 10 days.

18. Do you have any tips on making the spray tan last longer?

1. Bring loose, baggy clothing to wear after your appointment. Tight clothing will rub against your skin and may cause patches.
2. To avoid strap marks, I recommend you do not wear your bra after you appointment, until your tan has fully developed and you have washed it off.
3. Bring flip-flops to wear after your appointment, as shoes/socks will cause the tan to rub off/leave patches.
4. Wait at least 8 hours before showering after your spray tan.
5. Moisturize with an oil free moisturizer.

19. Wow! We’ve covered a lot of territory in this interview, Anna. Of course, people may still have more questions and if so, how can they reach you?

For more information about Anna and spray tans, please visit Lash and Glow or call 250-857-7837 and be sure to say, “I’m looking forward to hosting a Saturna Island spa party!”

I’m about to live a dream I’ve had for most of my life.

Let me take you back to the mid-80’s when I was 15 or 16 years old. One summer, I went to a tennis camp in upstate New York and one of the girls I met there, Raisa, was from Chicago and she told me that she once saw this woman called, “Oprah Winfrey,” in the airport and that was the most famous person she had ever seen. I hadn’t heard of Oprah at that point but for some reason I made a mental note. Raisa said, “keep an eye out for her because some day she’ll be a household name.”

Wow, did she ever call that one!

A few months later, Oprah’s talk show went national and my mom and I watched her show at 4pm in the afternoons. The Oprah Show, among other talk shows of the era, inspired me and my friends to pretend we had our own talk show and we would interview each other and sing songs and laugh at our own goofiness. I think we also recorded our shenanigans on the technological marvel of the time, VHS!

I didn’t mention Oprah because I’m about to meet her – that’s not the dream I’m talking about – though fingers crossed, maybe I’ll meet her some day :) .

I mentioned Oprah because to me, she’s a great communicator and she has been one of the touchstones of my life. Someday, I’d like to thank her in person for paving the way for people like me and for showing the world how important good communication is in the grand scheme of things.

Back to my story. Also while I was in high school, I went on a weekend retreat. At some point, everybody had to go to the front of the room and speak to the group and share their story. That was a turning point moment for me because when I stood at the podium and spoke to everyone and made them laugh, I discovered that I actually like public speaking!

I think my dream of being a professional speaker was born in my teens but as my life continued, the dream somehow never got off the ground in spite of my many attempts.

Fast forward a few years to the early ‘90’s – this was before the Internet! I was in University studying English. One weekend, I dragged my friends to a Psychic Fair and I sat down with a man called, “Ravenhawk.” He told me that he saw me having my own radio show one day. Before he could finish his thought, I interrupted him, which ticks me off to this day, but those words have always stuck with me.

The following year, I took a speech course at University and it was by far my favourite class of my entire degree.

A few years later, I almost went to Broadcasting school, which I should have done in hindsight, but that didn’t work out.

I’ve also been a member of Toastmasters and may return soon.

So that’s basically my history with public speaking. I like to joke that I’m taking the extended milk run toward my dream.

I think Ravenhawk said the radio show won’t happen till my early 40’s and I wish he had said something like “have patience” and “don’t try to force it” because the timing won’t be right sooner.

Well, I’ve just turned 45 and things are coming together for me. The pieces of the puzzle are taking shape.

Suddenly my dream of speaking to an audience is within reach because a few months ago, out of the blue, I got an email with the subject line, “Speak up, the World is Listening!”

Those words struck me like a lightening bolt.

And now I’m ready to make my announcement.

This is brand new information and you are among the first to know.

I have a new radio show called, “Supernatural Spa” on VoiceAmerica starting in the autumn! I’m so excited, I can hardly contain myself!

I’m going to be talking about how spas are designed to stimulate the senses and elicit the relaxation response. I’m going to interview all kinds of holistic practitioners for tips on how to manage stress and lead a healthier life.

But wait, there’s more…

To get the ball rolling for my show and to introduce myself to more people, my executive producer and I have come up with a really fun and unique idea! I’ve combined my education and all of my life experience, work experience, talents, skills and interests and my entire heart and soul to create a Stress Relief VIP Spa Day!

New: Facial Steam With Ozone on the Mobile Spa Menu

I recently acquired a new portable mini facial steamer for Homespunspa Mobile Spa and I just wanted to let you know how excited I am about it.

See the steam against the purple towel. Photo by Maria Koropecky

It’s an F-100 Mini Facial Steamer made by Silver Fox and it works like a charm.

As many of you know, I’m an English major and writer and I’m always curious to see how words play out in translation. Obviously, the people behind my mini steamer aren’t native English speakers and with no disrespect intended, I want to share with you some of their words about their product.

On the box it says:

“Portable Mini Facial Steamer”

“…Deeply clean the skin, effectively exterminate the skin germ and make the skin moister…”

“Supernatural Function”

  • “Deeply clean the skin
  • Replenish the moisture of the cell
  • Promote the blood-cycle
  • Effectively exterminate the skin germ”

“Six warm colours for choices”

  • “Orange
  • Green
  • Purple
  • White
  • Yellow
  • White-Blue

(I have the white one in case you were wondering).

And in the brochure, it says:

“FUNCTIONS:”

  1. “Open up the skin pores for deep cleaning the dirt inside.
  2. When the vapor penetrates through the skin pores, it may soften and clean the grease, black head, make-up remnants and dirt.
  3. The ozonizer which sending out ozone will effectively kill the skin bacteria, keep the skin healthy, soften the necrotic cell of skin surface necrotic.
  4. Help the skin pores release toxin.
  5. Activiate the blood circulation, stimulate the metabolism of cells, better improve the wrinkle.”

“INSTALLATION:”

  1. “Base seat stands on the desk.
  2. Check if the machine body is tightly twisted with water container.
  3. Slightly twist the combination of nozzle pipe and insert them into the round circle on top of the body.
  4. Move the nozzle to the using direction.”

“INSTRUCTION:”

  1. “Supply some clean water until the water comes up to the upper limit from filler on the top of the machine body.
  2. Plug the power switch.
  3. Press the “steamer” or “power” key. The light turns on and the machine starts to heat. In about 6 minutes, the vapor will spray out from the nozzle, and then the ozonizer can be operated as needed.
  4. Press the “ozone” key. The light turns on and the ozonizer operates when the power turns on. There is obvious atomization and flavor together with the vapor distinctly.
  5. During the operation, the water level will decline when the vapor sprays out constantly. In case the water level approaches the lower limit, firstly turn off the atomizing key and cut off the power supply. About 3-4 minutes later, supply some clean water (between upper limit and lower limit) from filler on the top of the machine body, and then plug the power switch to resume the operation.”

“MAINTENANCE:”

  1. “Clean the scale out of the water container and heater in time. Cleaning method: using a soft metal brush or marinate in the vinegar for 5-7 minutes, then clean the heater or water container with clear water.
  2. Keep alert on the water level during operation.”

“CAUTION:”

  1. “Water level: when working, water level should be keep between the upper limit.
  2. Current leakage: when supplying water, don’t spill water in the power switch, so as to avoid current leakage.
  3. Control time: though the ozone may kill the bacteria but it’s not well using for long time. The period of time used should be according to the skin types:”

“Skin types (remedy suits case)”

  • “reasy skin, poor blood circulation, 30-35 cm, 15 min
  • Neutral & mixture skin, 30-35 cm, 10 min
  • Dry skin, 30-35 cm, 5 min
  • Sensitive skin, 35 cm, 5 min
  • Stained skin, 30-35 cm, 10 min”

Sign me up and send one over!

I recently had a chance to try out my new facial steamer on my best customer, Linda. She asked me if I could extract a white head from her cheak. For this appointment, I used products that have stronger exfoliating properties and I was hoping to soften the skin with the facial steamer during the first masque treatment.

Unfortunately, I forgot to pack the wand but decided to go ahead and use the steamer anyway. The white head proved too stubborn and I wasn’t able to extract it on the spot but the next day, here is the message that Linda left on my voicemail:

“Hi Maria, I just wanted to let you know that whatever you did yesterday with working on that little spot on my face, I just ran my thumbnail over that little white, oil knob there and it came right off this morning so it looks like whatever you did there worked fine and you didn’t have to squeeze too hard. I just wanted to let you know that it worked fine.” ~ Linda

In the end, with or without the nozzle wand, I think the facial steamer helped.

Again, I wasn’t trying to be mean by writing out the “user-maintenance instructions.” I just love languages and hearing how other people use words. And I really love my new F-100 Mini Facial Steamer. Having a Facial Steamer With Ozone on the Mobile Spa Menu will really help me give even better facials and back treatments from now on.

If you’d like to make an appointment for a facial or a back treatment and see the F-100 live and in person, please contact me, Maria, and I’d be happy to bring it to your appointment. And if you mention this blog post, I’ll waive the $10 fee for this extra service.

Homespunspa Mobile Spa is going full steam ahead! :)

1 in 5 People have Adult Acne

by Maria Koropecky, Homespunspa owner

Well, I’m officially back from my Wellness Tour in Ontario. It’s good to be back home on the west coast. I enjoyed my time and learned a lot about wellness and healing and am eager to share my new knowledge with my friends and customers.

Experiencing a true Canadian winter was a refreshing change for me. I got a taste of -25 degrees Celsius temperatures, a couple of blizzards, snow, ice, wind and all of the rest and didn’t mind the season so much. There’s nothing like a bright, sunny day in the middle of winter compared to grey skies and rain for months on end as I was used to. I was grateful to have a warm coat, dry boots, a hat, scarf and gloves which kept me warm and dry enough and thank goodness, I didn’t catch a cold like every one else around me.

I found, however, that the different climate did a number on my skin. My skin and hair became much oilier while I was away. I guess having the constant salty, ocean air blowing around me has been benefiting my skin all of these years and without it, my skin went out of balance. I wouldn’t have thought salt water breezes would be helpful until I saw that nasal spray commercial when they ask that fisherman if he has breathing problems and he says, “of course not, the salty air keeps my sinuses clear” or something like that.

Of course, there are many other factors that contribute to adult acne. We learned in school that 1 in 5 or 20% of adults over the age of 20 are currently experiencing cases of acne. You could be in your 30’s, 40’s and even 50’s and all of a sudden get bombarded with several open and closed comedones, blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules, pimples, cysts, redness and severe inflammation. It comes as quite a surprise because you think those days are long behind you.

Adult acne sufferers are a growing demographic and you’ll find more and more skin care companies responding to this trend by offering solutions that are taylor-made to adults and not teenagers.

Definition of Acne

Acne is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the skin, usually related to hormonal changes and overactive sebaceous glands. Symptoms include: redness, blemishes, pimples and blackheads which can be found of the face, shoulders and back.

4 Causes of Acne

  1. Excessive sebum/oil production.
  2. Abnormal Desquamation. Desquamation refers to the process of cells travelling from the bottom layer of the Epidermis (Stratum Germinativum) to the top layer (Stratum Corneum) and if this process happens either too quickly or too slowly, it’s considered abnormal and causes blocked pores.
  3. Proliferation of Propione Bacteria. Propione is the bacteria responsible for acne and it’s generated by Abnormal Desquamation.
  4. and Inflammation. The body produces inflammation as a defensive mechanism anytime it feels attacked.

There’s Hope for Adults with Acne

There are lots of things you can do to minimize acne outbreaks as an adult and in this post I’m going to cover nutrition.

Nutrition

If you’re suffering from adult acne, now’s the time to really kick up your nutrition and eat the healthiest foods you can find and afford. What you put into your body really shows up on your skin so be mindful. Here are some nutritional guidelines that can really help with acne breakouts for people of all ages.

  • Minimize hot, spicy, acidic and salty foods.
  • Minimize oily, deep fried, processed/refined and junk foods.
  • Minimize refined sugar.
  • Avoid eating at irregular times and late at night.
  • Do not eat Iodized salt.
  • Minimize common allergen foods such as milk, eggs, wheat and yeast.
  • Eat lots of low-fat yogurt.
  • Eat more garlic.
  • Drink more water and green tea.
  • Minimize pop and soft drinks.
  • Replace unhealthy snacks with almonds, walnuts, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds.
  • Select organic, free range, hormone-free meats.
  • Increase fibre-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains.
  • Eat a natural, seasonally-based cuisine.

Nutrition is just the tip of the iceberg. There are many other things we can all do to keep our skin clear and healthy. I’ll post more in a couple of days.
